Summer in China is hot. Some parts of the country have recorded land surface temperatures of up to a staggering 80C, such as the Flaming Mountains in the Xinjiang region. People walk the streets of Beijing with portable fans and cover up completely to avoid burns.
In this context, smart trinkets appear, such as the hat with built-in fan. However, the biggest success is on the beach, with facekinis. These are “bikini face”, i.e. masks that cover the entire face with holes for the eyes and nose, separate sleeves to cover the arms. At the beach, anything goes, including wide-brimmed hats and light jackets made of UV-resistant fabric.
“Compared to before the pandemic, two or three years ago, this year is much, much better than previous years. The volume of sales has definitely increased a lot this year,” a saleswoman who identified herself only as Wang, who works in a shop that sells hats, told The Guardian.
Concern about skin diseases
Many East Asian consumers prefer fair skin, and sunscreen products are also popular in neighboring countries such as South Korea.
“My main concern is developing skin diseases or developing sun spots,” said Li Xuyan, a 17-year-old student who was visiting a tourist area in Beijing with her mother, both of whom wore masks that covered most of their faces.
Facekinis can be used in water and have been in use in China for a few years now, made with light fabrics – some are even resistant to UV rays.
