The researchers relied on studies indicating the relationship between exercise and reduction of depressive symptoms. And, in parallel, they pointed out that there is selected evidence on the underlying neurobiological mechanisms in relation to the antidepressant effect of exercise.

Therefore, the researchers used the PRISMA guidelines and databases of randomized and relevant studies published up to September 12, 2022 as a “guideline”. The research proposal is the neurobiological mechanism of exercise intervention in depressive symptoms.

After including 32 articles for review, the scholars noted that these results showed that cortisol and brain-derived neurotrophic factor acted as a potential common mediator underlying the antidepressant effects of mind-body and exercise.

Thus, we conclude that exercises increase neurogenesis, reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines, and improve cardiorespiratory fitness, but more high-quality studies are needed for mind-body neurobiological responses or that exercises are indicated for a understanding of antidepressant effects.

The expert’s point of view

“The regular practice of physical activity goes a long way in alleviating depressive symptoms. In addition to improving oxygenation of the brain and helping to increase attention, perception and memory, the body produces a series of hormones, responsible for the feeling of pleasure and well-being, which helps to increase self-esteem, self-confidence, cognition and reduce stress,” Dr. Ana Laura Brauner, psychologist at Universitário Cajuru and São hospitals, responded exclusively to Sport Life Marcelino Champagnat.
