Pasta, pizza, desserts: no one can resist good Italian food. Considered the most popular cuisine in the world, Italian cuisine conquers for its flavor and simplicity, and can be found in all corners of the planet. Seeking the highest international recognition, the country’s government has decided to launch “Italian cuisine” as a candidate to join the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023 – and the chances of success are great.

The proposal was presented by the Italian government in March and recently received an official logo. The design was developed by students of an Italian school and mixes elements of the local cuisine with historical monuments of the country. The logo was presented at the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, a place that houses historical works and artifacts of Italian cuisine. “I love Italian cuisine” is the official motto of the nomination.

Italian recipes are not the only factor taken into consideration. The customs and culinary traditions of the country also come into play. In the official bid document, Italian cuisine is defined as “a set of social practices, rituals and gestures based on local knowledge”.

The official candidacy documents have been sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and to Unesco itself, and the process should be completed by the end of 2025 at the latest. The dossier was written by Professor Pier Luigi Petrillo, who has already handled the candidacies Italians went well.
