Second Daniela Ponti, a biosafety specialist, using expired makeup can pose significant risks to your skin and overall health. “Besides expired products that don’t sit properly on the skin, they can be harmful to your health. This happens because these cosmetics can contain bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms that proliferate after the validity period ”, she comments.

“Other points such as personal hygiene and proper cleaning of makeup brushes and sponges are important measures to avoid facial contamination. If the materials are for professional use, they should be discarded after use,” she adds.

Liquid products such as foundations, concealers and eyelash masks have a shorter shelf life than powdered cosmetics. “Since liquid products contain water, they are more susceptible to bacterial contamination. Liquid cosmetics have a maximum shelf life of 12 months, while powder cosmetics can be used for 36 months”explains the expert.

Despite the expiry date, improper storage of the products can compromise their validity. “In addition to the date shown on the packaging, changes in the texture, color or smell of cosmetics can indicate that the product is compromised. Choosing quality products and reliable brands is essential to reduce health risks”, concludes Daniela.
