Heart failure syndrome often begins to manifest itself unobtrusively, with shortness of breath being the primary symptom. “It tends to have a slow progression. At first the person is tired, has shortness of breath from more strenuous activities, such as running or climbing stairs, and then this shortness of breath worsens until it gets in the way of small efforts, such as taking a shower. This progresses until the person has shortness of breath at rest.“, explains Luiz Vellosocardiologist at the São Camilo Hospitals and professor of Medicine at the Centro Universitário São Camilo – SP.
The doctor specifies that, in its most aggravated state, shortness of breath appears when the patient is lying down or already sleeping. Therefore, he ends up waking up during the night and, in some cases, needs to sleep in a higher posture or even sitting up.
Another striking symptom is the appearance of edema or swelling. “It starts at the ankles, appearing at the end of the day. After increases until it no longer disappears. Legs, thighs, genitals may swell, the abdomen may also swell due to fluid retention“, notice. Shortness of breath is also caused by the accumulation of fluid in the lungs.
In some cases, the patient may reverse the urinary habit, i.e. go to urinate more during the night than during the day.
Causes
The failure results from one or more heart diseases, such as those affecting the heart muscle or coronary arteries.
“The risk conditions that increase the onset of these other diseases end up indirectly leading to failure. High blood pressure, for example, is a risk factor for coronary artery disease, which causes a heart attack. A heart attack can cause heart failure by damaging the heart muscle.Velloso says.
Diabetes, high cholesterol levels and smoking are also considered risk factors.
