Rich in fiber and nutrients, corn is one of the most consumed foods this time of year. Discover its main advantages

Just June begins that the urge to eat corn is already striking, whether in hominy, popcorn, pamonha or on the cob. It is the most cultivated cereal in the world, with origins ranging from 7,500 to 12,000 years ago. In Brazil, corn is the king of June festivals, traditional festivals that cover the entire national territory at this time of the year.
Brazil is the third largest producer in the world, with 64 million tons per year, behind only the United States (in first place, with 384 million tons) and China (in second place, with 231 million tons). Corn is a commodity, i.e. a raw material used by industry to create various industrialized products, such as feed, syrups and alcohol.
“Although most remembered in June, corn is a very rich food from a nutritional point of view and should be much more present in the Brazilian diet. It is part of our cultural identity, referring to their culture by the natives, as well as be tasty and very versatile in the kitchen “, explains Patricia de Moraes Pontilho, coordinator of the Nutrition course at Faculdade Anhanguera.
The expert mentions the main benefits of eating food. Watch!
benefits of corn
Rich in nutrients. Corn contains vitamins A, B1 (responsible for the breakdown of fats, which contribute to metabolism, as well as being important for the development of the nervous system), C and magnesium.
Source of carotenoids. This is the substance responsible for the yellowish pigment in corn. Carotenoids are very important for human nutrition, acting directly on cellular respiration, with antioxidant action in the body.
Contains lutein and zeaxanthin. They are two substances with antioxidant action that protect cells from free radicals.
Rich in fiber. Because it undergoes fewer refining processes (which happens with other grains such as rice and wheat), corn retains better properties, especially in the husk of food. Therefore, it is rich in fiber, which helps the intestinal tract function properly and controls blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
Power supply. Since it contains complex carbohydrates, corn helps in the production of energy for the body.
Precautions when eating food
The expert points out that corn is an excellent ally when used in a balanced diet, but moderation is required. “It is best to eat corn in its natural form, such as boiled corn, or even in the minimally processed form, such as the cornmeal used for couscous,” he comments.
The nutritionist advises against consumption in its industrialized forms, such as snacks or corn cereals, as these foods undergo chemical processes in the industry, as well as receive chemical additives for preservation.
“It is important to point out that, when consumed in large quantities, corn can lead to weight gain: 100 grams of cooked corn contains about 98 calories. Compared to french fries, but it cannot be consumed without moderation in diets, as it also has important calories “, concludes Patricia.
