Hypnotherapy can treat a number of psychosomatic illnesses. Discover the therapeutic potential of hypnosis
Hypnosis, for many, seems like something out of a movie. Therefore, it is often associated with a form of entertainment and “magic”. However, this view is wrong, says psychologist and hypnotherapist, author of the book “Yes or No – The Difficult Art of Putting Yourself First in Life”, Gislene Erbs. She points out that there is therapeutic potential in the technique.

“Hypnosis has been used by serious and qualified professionals in clinics, hospitals and even health centers to treat psychosomatic diseases. That is, disorders such as phobias, fears, depression, anxiety, panic syndrome, addictions, insomnia, sexual problems such as impotence, ejaculation premature, pain, fibromyalgia and even cases of food intolerances”, he underlines.
Hypnosis as therapy
According to Gislene, this type of use of hypnosis (hypnotherapy) is only possible because it is a technique capable of focusing and holding the patient’s attention. It reduces peripheral awareness and causes detailed information in response to a cue or cue to be brought to the surface.
“Through hypnosis we access the information recorded and interpreted by the subconscious. From there it is possible to carry out re-education to modify the emotions and disorders resulting from these interpretations”, he explains.
The hypnotherapist explains that the subconscious has the ability to generate emotions from a past story to a present situation. That is, without any correlation with the event that happened. This, in turn, can generate inappropriate and/or misunderstood behavior on the part of the person themselves and new reactions and conflicts, which end up intensifying the problem.
“Therefore, the sooner the individual undergoes this emotional re-education, the less somatic symptoms and pain resulting from the trauma will be,” says the professional.
How hypnotherapy works
A typical hypnosis session begins, according to the psychologist, with a thorough evaluation of the patient. The goal is to understand your real needs, because often the complaint is not the underlying problem.
“Taking into account that there are different hypnosis techniques, the next step of the session, as a rule, leads to trance. Thus, addressing the origins of the difficulty or problem, culminating in re-education and a new understanding of the experienced facts,” explains Gislene.
When to resort to treatment?
“Any suffering patient who wants a change can benefit from hypnotherapy,” emphasizes Gislene. Although her experience has shown that hypnotherapy gives good results, she emphasizes that the way each person perceives the results of the treatment is always different.
“There are patients who resolve their difficulties with a single session and others who do not,” says the hypnotherapist. She points out that the outcome depends on a number of variables. However, the psychologist points out, treatment, which is usually the last alternative for people who suffer, could in many cases be the first, as it represents a quicker way to resolve some difficulties.
In any case, the patient who opts for hypnotherapy should consult a qualified professional, preferably with training in psychology or medicine, says the psychologist. To be sure of making the right choice, Gislene advises the patient to check the qualifications of the professional and whether she is eager for knowledge, studious and looking for new techniques and above all whether she has a proven track record. “A good professional is always concerned with patient confidentiality, ethics and well-being,” she says.
Choose the right professional
According to the hypnotherapist there is no problem in looking for professionals with other training, as long as they are not just curious or simply looking for fame and power. “Professionals with such characteristics may be able to ‘unbox’ emotions and then not know what to do with them. Furthermore, they may not be aware of the limitations of each of them,” she says.
According to Gislene, by acting in this way, these “hypnotherapists” often deepen conflicts instead of finding solutions and, even through imprudence, implant false memories in their patients.
Finally, the psychologist underlines that a good hypnotherapist, despite being aware that the technique is very effective in the treatment of various diseases, never promises a cure, as no one has control over anyone and hypnosis is just a tool. “In this sense, medical monitoring, tests and psychological support are also necessary”, he concludes.
