Italian wine will conquer Brazil

Wine South America records record attendance with Veronafiere

By Patrizia Antonini – A market with over 200 million consumers, with growing economic numbers and good development margins for the export of Italian wine.

Brazil represents an “important bet” for Veronafiere/Vinitaly, which participated in the Wine South America event, in Bento Gonçalves, in Rio Grande do Sul, recording a “record number of Italian exhibitors” and the “enthusiasm” of Brazilian producers intent on landing at the next edition of the Verona event.

In the tricolor pavilion of the fair, which closes tomorrow (14th), there are more than two dozen operators, representing dozens of labels and varieties, of which 13 in the stand organized by ICE/ITA.

A flow that can also be explained by the growth of “4.4% of Italian wine imports between January and August, compared to the same period in 2022”, with a turnover of between “23.5 and 24.6 million dollars” , highlighted Ferdinando Fiore, commander of the ICE/ITA office in Brazil.

“We believe that wine also has all the prerequisites for future developments”, observe the director of Vinitaly Gianni Bruno, and the member of the board of directors of Milanez & Milaneze, partner of Veronafiere, Alessandro Giolai.

In this regard, it is worth remembering that Brazil represents the fourth largest market for Italians in the Americas, after the United States, Canada and Mexico.

And Italy appears as the fourth supplier, with a share of 7%, behind Chile, Argentina and Portugal.

“In terms of value, it is almost 37 million dollars purchased by Brazilians, or about 8% of the total imported,” adds Fiore.

But now also the producers of the Serra Gaúcha in Rio Grande do Sul, the capital of grapes and wine of Brazil, destination of the great Italian immigration in the 19th century, who established the cultivation of vines here, and where “talian” is spoken , the ancient Venetian dialect – they intend to make their varieties known in Italy. And they are thinking of participating in the next edition of Vinitaly.

A result also due to the great work of the consul general of Porto Alegre, Valerio Caruso, who since his arrival – a year ago – has dedicated himself to re-establishing ties with the territory. And which further enhanced the Italian participation of Wine South America with an important initiative of closeness to local authorities and business communities.

“We are proud that in the cradle of a historic and very strong community of Italian descent it is possible to do such important teamwork with the Italian system, strengthening Italian excellence and promoting the Gauchos”, notes the consul.

A trend that Vinitaly welcomes. «In the last edition of the Verona event we had around 33 thousand operators from 134 countries. The majority goes to Italy, which accounts for 95% of the exhibitors, but we notice a new attention to foreign wines. And the Brazilians who come will benefit from it, precisely because they represent an alternative proposal”, underlines Bruno.

On the other hand, Italian operators highlight how the Brazilian market presents some challenges and critical issues.

The main difficulty is duties. Above all, for those who decide not to rely on the Brazilian “trade” or “comex”, the cost for the importer leaving Italy can rise up to 152%.

And among the main attractions for Italian wines are the cities of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais, but there is no shortage of new and continuous ideas, also driven by the country’s tourism and food and wine sectors.
