If you work without breaks and can’t stop thinking about your work, perhaps you are a workaholic, a workaholic. Sabrina Sato, host of the program “Sobre Nós Dois” on GNT, who recently landed a spot on Fantástico/TV Globo, has already declared herself a workaholic; Comedian Luis Lobianco, who works on the program “Vai que Cola”, also declared himself a workaholic.
In recent years, with the advancement of technology and constant connectivity, the overvaluation of excess work has become increasingly evident. According to a recent survey carried out by Oracle and Workplace Intelligence, carried out on 12 thousand employees from 11 countries, it was identified that one of the problems reported was the difficulty of separating working time from free time.
Among Brazilians, 42% say they work at least 40 hours more per month, higher than the global average (35%).
For Patrícia Y. Agopian, career expert and CEO of Bússola Executiva, an online school for career acceleration, working long hours is not synonymous with professional success, as well as triggering emotional disorders such as professional burnout syndrome, better known like Burnout. For some workaholics, displaying their dream career is seen as a form of performance, highlighting not only achieving something significant, but turning one’s progress into some sort of trophy.
Synonym of dedication? No it is not!
For some professionals, excessive work can be read as synonymous with dedication, commitment and success. What they don’t know is that working nonstop doesn’t act as a bridge to professional growth, but rather to burnout.
“Once you are burned out, your performance declines and your actions are less strategic, which limits your career advancement,” says the career expert.
Patricia explains that being a workaholic is no guarantee of success. This doesn’t mean the person doesn’t need to put in the effort.
“You need to know how to show your value for higher positions. Sure, there are times when professionals may need to dedicate themselves more, but that doesn’t mean compromising their quality of life. The important thing is not how much you do, but how much you can generate value for those around you and above you,” advises Patrícia.
Synonym of success? No it is not!
For psychologist Ana Streit it is important to deconstruct the idea that excess work is synonymous with success. Although work is an important pillar of self-esteem, we must have common sense.
Often when the professional is a compulsive worker there is a lack of space in social life. The person needs to set limits and establish boundaries between work and personal life.
“The first piece of advice is not to take from your personal life to compensate at work. And understand what is behind this incessant search for work and reflect on what is important in our lives beyond work,” she emphasizes.
HOMEWORK inspires transformation in the world of work, in business, in society. Compasso, a content and connection agency, is born.
