A raw fish recipe has caused thousands of health problems in Thailand and killed more than 20,000 people.
Koi Pla, as it is known, is made from chopped and ground raw fish with a mixture of herbs, spices and lemon juice. The dish is very popular in Isaan province in northeastern Thailand and the danger lies in consuming freshwater fish with worms.
These parasites are responsible for liver cancer, one of the diseases that kills the most if not diagnosed and treated correctly.
Koi Pla is estimated to be responsible for the deaths of 20,000 people every year in Thailand. A study in which researchers analyzed the urine of local people showed that around 80% of people in the community had eaten fish with the parasite.
Thai doctor Narong Khuntikeo lost his parents to liver cancer after eating the fish dish. “It’s a big health issue here,” the liver surgeon told AFP.
“But no one knows because they die silently, like leaves falling from a tree,” he added. Despite the serious health risks posed by koi pla, many people argue that cooking the fish, which is the best way to kill the parasite, completely ruins the flavor.
At a testing site visited by AFP, a third of villagers had abnormal liver symptoms and four were suspected of having cancer.
