The worldwide hair loss epidemic is a major concern, even among young people.

“It is advisable to consult a dermatologist when loss exceeds 100 hairs per day. Since it is a progressive process, the hair thins, becoming increasingly thinner, until it completely loses the function of the bulb. To avoid this, the doctor may prescribe outpatient treatments, such as laser and the infusion of drugs and active ingredients into the scalp to stimulate hair growth, as well as a home care protocol with the use of medications, topical and oral , and supplements.” , explains Cintia Guedes, dermatologist member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD).

To solve the problem, many new products come onto the market every year. More recently, three of these have gained prominence: an injectable hyaluronic acid for hair, a radiofrequency microneedling designed for the scalp, and regenerative treatment with the patient’s own cells.

NCTF – Injectable and enriched hyaluronic acid

According to dermatologist Renato Soriani, a member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, the injectable combines hyaluronic acid with 12 vitamins, 24 amino acids, 6 enzymes, 5 nucleic acids and 6 minerals to revitalize follicle health.

“The formula contains a powerful antioxidant, glutathione, which plays a fundamental role in fighting the harmful effects of oxidative stress on the hair follicle, as well as improving microvascularization,” says Lilian Brasileiro, doctor specializing in Hair Medicine, member of the Society Brazilian dermatologist, coordinator and speaker at events on hair treatments.

The treatment has “in vitro” and human studies. “In ‘in vitro’ tests the product significantly stimulated cell multiplication (147%) and the synthesis of intracellular (165%) and extracellular collagen (200%),” explains Renato Soriani.

In humans, the technique was tested on 10 patients with the aim of verifying the opportunity and effectiveness of the association between this injectable hyaluronic acid and LED in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia.

“The therapy stopped hair loss after a month with one or two sessions. Already from the third session, visible growth was noticed, progressively as the treatment was carried out, with a consequent increase in density, volume and improvement in the quality of the hair (shinier, more elastic and repigmented)”, explains the doctor.

Megaderme Duo

The microneedling radiofrequency system works to improve hair loss, ensure accelerated growth and thicken hair.

“It has a system of extremely fine microneedles, which will act at the level of the hair bulb with extremely low radiofrequency energy to stimulate without atrophy. This is the big difference,” explains dermatologist Abdo Salomão Jr., member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology.

“For a radio frequency to have a positive effect on the scalp, it must be an extremely low and balanced dose. In addition to stimulating the bulbs, it opens the channels for drug delivery, that is, the application of drugs through the entry channels that the needles have created in the skin, stimulating cell differentiation, which also helps to thicken the hair,” he adds the doctor.

“This technique is versatile and can bring benefits in the treatment of senile hair thinning and baldness, it can be used in the treatment of alopecia areata to inject active ingredients and drugs directly into the hair root, to improve hair growth and recovery post-hair loss conditions and can be a strategy to improve hair growth,” he adds.

According to the doctor, during the session, the patient feels slight pain, less than that of a roller procedure, since the needles are extremely thin. “And the diagonal arrangement means that they are distant from each other, preventing the pain from concentrating,” he explains. The protocol is carried out in three monthly sessions.

Regenerates AMT

It is a regenerative treatment, carried out with autologous micrografts of mesenchymal cells. According to Lilian Brasileiro, the treatment is minimally invasive, is done in an office and is not a hair implant.

“In this technique, the doctor extracts healthy follicular cells from the patient’s neck. Then, they are placed in a machine that releases progenitor cells. These cells, which are like workers and multiply to stimulate hair growth, are applied to the area where the patient needs hair to grow,” explains the doctor.

Regenera AMT treatment is approved in 60 countries. The procedure is indicated for baldness, both male and female, and is performed in an outpatient clinic under local anesthesia. “Sessions last an hour on average. One or two per year are recommended, with results seen within six to nine months,” says the doctor.

Keravive HydraFacial

The big advantage of outpatient treatment is the fact that it provides deep cleansing and exfoliation that the patient cannot achieve with regular washing at home, according to Lilian Brasileiro.

The doctor explains that, in the first phase of the treatment, the exclusive Vortex Fusion technology of HydraFacial Keravive generates a vortex effect capable of promoting deep and exfoliating cleansing and improving microcirculation and blood flow in the scalp during the application of the Beta HD-Clear solution.

“In addition to contributing to this cleansing and exfoliation process, this solution has antibacterial, hydrating, exfoliating and calming properties as it contains active ingredients such as salicylic acid and honey and flower extracts, which make it extremely beneficial for the health of the scalp” , the specialist details.

“The procedure can also help treat hair loss and can stimulate the growth of follicles if they are resting. It is worth remembering that a number of factors influence the success of therapy, such as the type of alopecia and the patient’s individual response. But, in general, improving the health of the scalp, with greater nutritional support and an increase in the microcirculation process, can contribute to the treatment of different types of hair loss,” he adds.

Home treatment

Medicines and supplements can be used at home to promote hair growth, but a prescription is essential. According to dermatologist Cintia Guedes, they can block the action of the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme (responsible for converting the hormone testosterone into dihydrotestosterone or DHT, which causes hair loss), as is the case with finasteride and dutasteride. There are also topical medications containing 5% minoxidil.

“The medicine, which can come in the form of a lotion or foam, should be applied directly to the scalp with light friction. The increase in blood circulation in the scalp favored by the medicine improves oxygenation of the region. Together with this action, a prolongation of the anagen (growth) phase of the hair is expected. They also tend to become thicker, stronger and healthier,” explains the dermatologist.

As for oral supplements, exsynutriment (silicon stabilized in marine collagen) and biotin can be used. “Silicon acts as a stimulator of collagen production and also as a restructuring of the skin architecture,” says the doctor.

“The hair follicle nourished with silicon and soaked in collagen will promote an increase in the production of keratin, which strengthens the hair, preventing hair loss and providing greater resistance and elasticity,” he points out.

In the case of biotin, the doctor must evaluate whether the patient has this nutritional deficiency. “But the recommendation should always be made by a dermatologist to evaluate the real need for supplementation,” she specifies.

Hair transplant

As for invasive treatments, the most famous is hair transplant. “Basically, the procedure consists of removing the patient’s follicular units (hair roots) from one region, called the donor area, to transplant them into another,” says Diogo Coimbra, a plastic surgeon specializing in hair transplantation and a member of the Association Brazilian hair transplant. Plastic Surgeons (BAPS).

According to BAPS, hair transplant is not only recommended for men suffering from androgenetic alopecia. “Women with this condition also benefit from hair transplantation. Additionally, the procedure may be indicated to restore and/or increase hair density in other areas, such as beards and eyebrows, to reduce the size of the forehead, or even to repair after-effects of previous procedures, such as facelift scars or unsatisfactory results . from other hair transplants,” says Diogo Coimbra.

Hair transplant results, according to BAPS, are extremely natural, as long as the procedure is performed by a properly certified professional with extensive experience.

“After the transplant, which is carried out follicle by follicle following the natural angle and distribution of the hair, the hair grows back with the same color, texture and growth rate as the area from which it was removed. There is no risk of rejection, since the follicular units used come from the patient himself, and the results are permanent, since the procedure is performed with follicular units that do not have the genetics of baldness,” says Diogo Coimbra.

One year after the surgery, the patient will see the final result. BAPS emphasizes that the patient should consult an experienced plastic surgeon, as adequate evaluation and the practitioner’s technique are factors that directly affect the outcome of the procedure.

If you have any doubts about the specialist, BAPS suggests checking whether the doctor has an RQE, which is the qualification certificate of the specialty, and looking for other people who have already undergone procedures with the professional to check what the experience has been and the results.
