D’Or Oncology plays a leading role in cancer care in Latin America

Exclusive technologies, clinical research and operations integrated with Rede D’Or hospitals are hallmarks of personalized care

Every month more than 10 thousand people seek treatment at Oncologia D’Or, the largest integrated cancer treatment network in the country. Two main factors motivate this choice: medical teams led by internationally renowned experts in their fields and access to exclusive technologies in the country.

Oncologia D’Or is part of Rede D’Or, the largest healthcare company in Latin America. It currently has 55 oncology clinics integrated into the group’s 73 hospitals, as well as the most advanced radiotherapy park in the country.

With over R$100 million invested in equipment over the last five years, Rede D’Or offers one of the most advanced radiotherapy services, with unique equipment in Brazil, such as CyberKnife and TomoTherapy (see table) – and resources that allow the treatment of some tumors previously considered inoperable.

“Thanks to Rede D’Or’s national coverage, access to the most up-to-date protocols and treatments is within the reach of a greater number of patients. This allows for the same quality of care in all our units,” emphasizes Paulo Hoff, president of Oncology D’Or.

Pioneering technologies

The Rede D’Or radiotherapy park brings together the most modern technologies in the world, which reduce treatment times and possible adverse effects. In breast cancer, for example, patients who needed 25 to 30 sessions of radiation therapy are now treated with 15 sessions. In cases of prostate cancer, CyberKnife made it possible to reduce the radiotherapy sessions for treatment from 39 to just 5, carried out on consecutive days. “It is what we call ultra-hypofractionated radiotherapy, carried out at very short intervals and with higher doses, which, thanks to the precision of the technology, can be irradiated safely”, explains radiation oncologist Elisângela Santos Carvalho, medical coordinator of Radiotherapy at Network D ‘Or of Bahia.

Integration of care

In Oncologia D’Or the patient is followed by the same team from diagnosis to treatment. “The patient goes through all stages of his journey within our hospitals and clinics, with the support of specialists who make decisions together,” says radiation oncologist Allisson Borges, medical director of the DF Star hospital, in Brasilia (DF).

“We have an integrated system of images and medical records, which facilitates multidisciplinary discussion of complex cases. We are able to offer the best individualized response to the disease, which increases the recovery rates of our patients,” adds Karina Moutinho, coordinator of the Radiotherapy service of the Rede D’Or.

“With the support of renowned professionals and the high-performance technologies we provide, patients receive treatment equal to that of the best cancer centers in the United States and Europe,” emphasizes medical physicist Renan Serrano, head of radiation therapy.

New scenario for the patient

More than prepared for the technological advances that are changing the direction of cancer treatments, Oncologia D’Or and Rede D’Or are playing an active role in this change. Recently, Rede D’Or opened a reference molecular pathology laboratory in Latin America, with unprecedented testing for rapid diagnosis and personalized treatment of cancer patients.

Furthermore, together with the D’Or Institute for Research and Education (IDOR), Rede D’Or invests in clinical research with new drugs and therapeutic possibilities, with particular attention to the oncology area. The research partnership already enables the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in X-rays to diagnose, for example, lung cancer.

“Our large number of cancer patients is an opportunity to conduct work that can change the treatment and clinical outcome of these patients”, recalls Pedro Pinho, radio-oncologist at Oncology D’Or in Rio de Janeiro and IDOR researcher.

“Molecular genomics, combined with innovations in digital health, image analysis and data science, is revolutionizing healthcare. By investing in new technologies, Rede D’Or is driving precision oncology in Latin America,” says George Netto, professor and chair of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine, US.
