Opinion: The home office can be a hit in the foot

Metaverse, lives, avatars, calls, home – or even anywhere – office. Everything leads us to believe that the future is contactless. But will it do it? Especially for technology companies, the need to work face-to-face is already a point considered by some professionals to analyze whether or not to participate in the selection process for a vacancy.

With the ability to work from home in Brazil for a company on the other side of the world, even the hybrid model ends up being discarded by many talents in the area.

A Microsoft survey of job trends, with data from 31,000 people in 31 countries, showed that, around the world, 51% of hybrid workers are willing to switch to fully remote work. But to show that there is still no consensus on this issue, 57% of remote workers are also considering switching to hybrid.

There is no denying that our relationships, and this includes – and a lot – the work environment, will never be the same again. The future exists and it is technological and intelligent. There is no more space for the “come, sit, work, leave” format. Always in the same place, always at the same time, without analyzing if it makes sense for the tasks you do and the tools you have. But there is a side of remote working that few people publicly admit: it is not equally productive for everyone nor the best option at all times of your career and professional projects.

There are also studies showing that productivity growth is also not a matter of course. Research from the University of Chicago’s Becker Friedman Institute showed that while there was a 30% increase in working hours during the pandemic, productivity decreased by 20%. And it’s not just about what is produced. But also how it is produced.

Companies are made up of people. And people don’t live completely without contact. Coming to the office benefits social activities such as group meetings, problem solving, and conversations with colleagues. It also strengthens the company’s culture and allows for more immediate identification of process bottlenecks. The truth is that personal contact is essential for regaining rhythm and relationship in professional environments. Little by little, we are remembering how many creative solutions and practical suggestions arise from spontaneous conversations side by side.

And that doesn’t make us any less hytech. The collective environment is part of the formation of a team, not alone. But within a broader strategy, which thinks about the particularities of each team member and their needs, especially in a post-pandemic context. The Microsoft survey itself proved this 71% of professionals surveyed said concern about well-being is greater now than it was before the pandemic. And there is no better way to practice empathy than to actually live with each other.

It is not having to choose between the comfortable sweater or the tight suit. He is realizing that there is a middle ground. Where we can take advantage of everything that technology offers us, but remember that even the low touch is not always our place.
