Mounjaro (tirzepatide) has been approved by Anvisa, but is not yet scheduled for marketing in Brazil
A new weight-loss drug has gained prominence due to its potential to shed body weight. This is Mounjaro, whose active ingredient is tirzepatide. Approved by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), it is a dual agonist, which differentiates it from Ozempic (semaglutide), used to treat type 2 diabetes and which has weight loss as an observed positive side effect.
How do weight loss drugs work?
According to nutritionist Dr. Patrícia Santiago, the mechanism of action of these drugs acts on the receptors of two crucial hormones in the intestine: GLP1 (glucagon-type 1 peptide) and GIP (insulinotropic polypeptide). In this way they promote the improvement of blood glucose levels and the reduction of appetite, leading to gradual weight loss.
Recently, journalist Luiz Bacci, from Cidade Alerta, shared that he uses Mounjaro to lose weight. He purchased the medicine in the United States, where it would cost about 2 thousand dollars per pen.
Is Mounjaro safe?
Mounjaro is administered as a weekly injection and is indicated for the control of glucose levels in adults. Studies show that in some cases weight loss can reach up to 20% of body weight, although side effects such as nausea, diarrhea and constipation may occur.
Patrícia emphasizes that it is important to emphasize that the use of Mounjaro for weight loss must be supervised by a doctor and must not be purely aesthetic, but with the aim of promoting improvements in health. “Moreover, its effect manifests itself satisfactorily only in combination with regular physical exercise,” adds the doctor.
Despite Anvisa’s approval, there is still no definitive date for the commercialization of Mounjaro on the Brazilian market. In addition to the Ozempic-like drug, Wegovy 2.4 mg is also awaiting launch, following approval in January. Both represent a new approach to treating obesity, but their use should always be guided by qualified healthcare professionals.
