On October 16th we celebrate Saint Gerald Magela, known by the Catholic community as the patron saint of pregnancy and motherhood
Patron saint of pregnancy, motherhood and those who are unjustly accused of something, today, October 16, the Catholic Christian community celebrates Saint Peter. Saint Gerald Magela.
History of São Geraldo Magela
Born on April 6, 1726 in the city of Muro Lucano, an Italian municipality in Basilicata, Geraldo Magela grew up amidst the Christian teachings cultivated by his family. He lost his father at a young age and was forced to work to help around the house.
Thus began his career as a tailor. At the age of 19 he already had his own business. The profit he received from clothing production was divided between his livelihood, his family’s support and donations to those most in need.
Shortly afterwards he was welcomed into the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, becoming a Redemptorist missionary. There he continued to work as a tailor, as well as being a gardener, nurse and doorman.
In 1745 Geraldo Magela was wrongly accused of having impregnated a woman called Black Caggiano. Soon, she denied the case and cleared the man. Out of curiosity, São Geraldo became known for having predicted his death, stating that he would die of tuberculosis on October 16, 1755.
Prayer to Saint Gerard Magela
“O Saint Gerard, we rejoice in the happiness of your glory. We bless God for the sublime gifts of your grace which have been so generously granted to you. We congratulate you for having responded faithfully to such benevolence of the Lord.
O Saint Gerard, help us to imitate your fidelity to the Divine Will: your love for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament: your singular devotion to the Most Holy Mary; your spirit of penance; the purity of your life and, finally, your great charity towards the poor, towards mothers and towards the most abandoned.
O Saint Gerard, help us in all our spiritual and material needs. Achieve pious conformity in the difficulties, illnesses and sufferings of life.
Bless mothers, of whom you are the special protector. Protect our parish. May God grant us many priestly and religious vocations. Pray for the Church of Jesus Christ and for the Holy Father, the Pope.
Saint Gerard, our patron saint, pray for us. Amen”.
