You don’t see them, but they are there: how to understand that there are cockroaches in your home

Perhaps if you become aware of these warning signs, you will call an exterminator immediately.

If there are only a few cockroaches, it is not so easy to notice them at home: these nocturnal insects know how to remain invisible. However, there are some signs that indicate the presence of pests in the home.

Mold smell

As pest expert Jordan Foster explains, cockroaches use “chemical messages” to communicate with each other. They mark their shelters with pheromones – their smell resembles almonds, spoiled raspberries or mold. Foster’s colleague Molly Keck adds that cockroaches like damp, quiet places, which is why they often nest behind kitchen and bathroom sinks. If you notice strange smells in these rooms, they may indicate the presence of cockroaches.

Brown stains

You may also notice the pheromones themselves, which cockroaches use to mark their territory – these brown, starchy, semi-liquid deposits leave visible marks on light-colored surfaces – usually, according to entomologist Nicholas Martin, horizontal marks. Most often, these spots are found in the kitchen, where cockroaches are looking for food sources.

Litter

As Martin explains, the droppings of small cockroaches look like ground pepper, while larger ones look like tiny brown or black grains of rice. The entomologist calls for vigilance: even very small quantities of insect excrement can be a sign of a serious infestation.

Bite marks

Cockroaches chew almost everything, so you may notice chew marks on various surfaces, like food packaging or even paper.

Strange pet behavior

Cats and dogs have a better sense of smell than humans, so pets are often the first to detect an infestation. “Your pets might be interested in areas where cockroaches have appeared; be careful of this behavior,” advises pest control company Lorne Hanevich.

Eggs

You will not confuse this evidence of the appearance of cockroaches in the house with anything. The most effective and easiest way to destroy eggs is to crush them or pour them with very hot water.
