Take care of your body with this step-by-step Ayurvedic detox
Ayurveda is a traditional, comprehensive and holistic healing system, practiced in India for more than five thousand years. In short, it literally means science of life. In this guide, you will learn the recipes and benefits of Ayurvedic detox.
In this ancient healthcare system, each person is seen as a whole: body, mind and soul. This is because, the Ayurveda believes it is essential to analyze the relationship between people and their environment.
In this way Ayurveda teaches how to stay healthy, balancing vital energies through food and healthy daily habits. Have fun and See how your sign’s health is herewith tips for your well-being.
What is Ayurvedic detox?
For this ancient system, good health depends on the body’s ability to metabolize nutrients, emotions and sensations. Therefore, when we have good Agni (fire), our body is able to create healthy tissues and eliminate toxins (ama) efficiently.
When Agni is weak, digestion can be incomplete and cause discomforts such as heartburn, bloating and constipation. In other words, low digestive capacity accumulates toxins and reduces our vital energy and concentration, leaving the body susceptible to disease.
To help the metabolism, Ayurveda recommends cleansing processes of the body (detoxification), i.e. Ayurvedic detoxification. This process can be:
- More intense and profound, such as Panchakarma (which last up to 21 days).
- But it can also be done through periodic seven-day food detox routines, which can be followed at home.
What you can’t have in an Ayurvedic Detox
It is important to eliminate the intake of industrialized, processed or canned products. And, also, avoid meat, milk, eggs, cheeses, oils, refined flours and sugar.
How to do an Ayurvedic detox
Discover below the guidelines for a week-long Ayurvedic detox, to try, for example, in the post-holiday period. In addition to detoxifying, it improves vital energy, digestion and concentration and also strengthens the immune system.
Get all the flavors in your meals
Sweet, salty, spicy, sour, bitter and astringent (prioritizing the last three). For example, look at these meals:
- Sweet: Rice (preferably brown or basmati) with almonds
- Astringent and spicy: green lentils seasoned with turmeric, cumin and ginger
- Sweet and astringent: sautéed pumpkin with clarified butter and leeks.
- Bitter: Spinach Cream
- Acidic and spicy: tomato salad with rocket
- Sour dessert: pineapple.
In Ayurveda the ideal is to prepare meals no more than four hours before consuming them and not to use the microwave. Also, opt for fresh organic vegetables and cook them with spices, whole grains and in soups.
What to consume in Ayurvedic detox
When you choose fruit, give preference to fresh ones, such as apples, papayas, pears, pomegranates, grapefruits, oranges, limes, lemons, plums, peaches. But also avoid bananas, avocados and persimmons.
Do you like pasta and rice? Choose those that contain whole grains. Additionally, red lentils, green lentils, split peas, moyashi beans are also great for your Ayurvedic detox.
Other items you should include are cooked vegetables such as zucchini, squash, chayote, yams, beetroot, carrots, spinach and fennel. And finally, don’t forget sprouts and leaves like arugula, lettuce and watercress. Salt and lemon are excellent condiments.
