The president took advantage of the anesthesia from the hip surgery to perform the blepharoplasty
Palácio do Planalto has released the first images of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) (PT) after the blepharoplasty surgery he underwent along with his hip surgery on September 29. The procedure is to remove excess skin and fat that tends to accumulate around the eyes as the skin ages.
Despite being a plastic surgery procedure, blepharoplasty does not only have aesthetic purposes. Excessive accumulation of skin around the eyes can reduce the field of vision and give a feeling of “tired eyes”, which is why the procedure, in more serious cases, can be carried out in the SUS.
2020 data from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) shows that blepharoplasty is the most performed procedure in Brazil, replacing rhinoplasty, which is a nose operation.
The results of blepharoplasty surgery are usually visible after the first two weeks after surgery, but the swelling completely disappears only after about six months.
At the end of September the president underwent hip arthroplasty surgery and had a prosthesis placed on the head of his femur. Since his campaign days, Lula had suffered pain in the region due to advanced osteoarthritis, which is the wear and tear of the cartilage that connects bones. The president will turn 78 on October 27.
According to the interview given by cardiologist Ricardo Kalil after the operation, the blepharoplasty was performed on the same day to take advantage of the effect of the anesthetic. The two operations performed by the president, on the hip and on the eyelid, are low risk.
Immediately after the surgery, Lula began undergoing physical therapy. He was discharged the same day and works at Palácio do Alvorada. During the Bolsa Família’s 20th anniversary celebration, which he attended via videoconference, Lula said he should return to Planalto this week.
This Saturday, the 21st, Lula underwent routine x-ray tests for post-operative control at the Sírio Libanês Hospital, in Brasilia, the same place where the president performed the surgery.
