An Australian university study indicates that neither women nor men prefer fun partners
Men and women can even use humor as a weapon when it comes to conquest. But it doesn’t work for everyone.
In fact, research conducted at the University of Queensland, Australia, concluded exactly the opposite. Analysis of more than 800 “first dates” has shown that there is no relationship between mood and success in such relationships.
According to the Daily Mail, to test the supposed “conventional wisdom” that being funny is attractive, researchers began by asking participants how funny their ideal matches should be. Therefore, they identified no differences in the perceptions of men and women.
In Phase 2, participants set up quick dates – always with a person of the opposite sex – and then rated their date’s mood and how much they enjoyed that behavior. For detailed analysis, they also recorded the frequency of laughter during the meeting.
With this, initially, the researchers even thought they were confirming the convention that women prefer funny men, but the idea soon fell apart. When looking at dating scores, the researchers noticed that neither men nor women showed greater interest in partners who made them laugh.
“Our findings suggest that forcing yourself to be funny on a date may be more counterproductive than helpful – you should just be yourself,” said research leader Henry Wainwright. In general, the success of the first meeting is due to common affinities or interests.
The study also attempted to understand the development of humor in societies. But they did not come to any great conclusions in this regard.
