Understand what telogen effluvium, a condition that causes hair loss after giving birth, is and what to do to treat it
In a recent interview, actress Claudia Raia said she suffered from intense hair loss after the birth of her last child, Luca. The 56-year-old actress reported losing so many “wisps” that she “felt like a wig was falling out of her hair.”
During pregnancy there is an increase in hormone production, which affects the entire body of the woman. Therefore, it is normal for hair to become more beautiful and fall out less during this period. However, some women may suffer from a hair loss after giving birthexplains dermatology specialist, Dr. Lilian Brasileiro.
This phenomenon is called Post-pregnancy telogen effluvium and this happens due to the sharp decline in female hormones which keep hair strong, shiny and dense during pregnancy, favoring its loss after the birth of the baby.
“This condition can begin mainly in the first four to six months. There is a decline in female hormones after childbirth and after caesarean section due to the stress of the post-operative period and often in cases where the patient does not rest enough, does not she eats as she should, other than the issue of breastfeeding,” she explains.
Care after birth
According to Lilian, hair loss after giving birth can be resolved with use of vitamins to nourish and strengthen hair. Starting from the third trimester, substances such as biotin, silicon, iron and zinc can be used, as well as folic acid. Furthermore, it is possible to put into practice some topical treatments, such as the use of lotions.
“In the clinic, after birth, treatments such as the non-ablative fractional laser and the drug microinfusion technique can be used, also associated with HydraFacial Keravive“, reveals the doctor.
The procedure, she says, “provides deep cleansing and exfoliation that the patient cannot achieve with regular washing at home, while infusing substances that nourish the hair.”
