The dirtiest place on a plane – never leave your belongings there!

There are many places in an airplane cabin that turn into a bacteria bomb during the flight – just look at a small bathroom used by hundreds of people! However, the most dangerous thing is something else, and it’s right in front of you.

Flight attendant tips

Someone once asked a flight attendant on Reddit, “What secrets should passengers know?” » A seasoned flight attendant replied, “Never, ever, ever put anything in your seat pocket!” »

As crew members explain, trash is removed from the seat pocket after a flight, but it is never disinfected or even wiped down. “What they don’t take away are dirty napkins, tissues that someone blew their nose in, socks, chewing gum, half-eaten lollipops and even diapers used. Think twice before putting your phone or laptop in your pocket,” a flight attendant advised.

What other places on a plane are very dirty?

First, the headrest: In one study, scientists examined more than 100 samples taken from airplane cabins on 18 flights, and that’s where they found the most bacteria, including E.coli.

Secondly, the trays – it turned out that on one square centimeter of their surface live 310 units of colony-forming bacteria – that is, those that are capable of reproduction. Here’s a benchmark for comparison: there are four times less on the toilet seat.

Flight attendants also advise wearing closed-toe shoes on the plane (and never taking them off!), and not wearing shorts, which will put the skin on your legs in constant contact with the seat. And finally, don’t lean your head against the window: no one knows how many children and adults have already wiped their hands there.

How to protect yourself from bacteria on a plane?

Deborah Goff, MD, pharmacist and infectious disease specialist, recommends always carrying antibacterial wipes containing at least 70% alcohol. Wipe down your tray, seat belt buckle, armrest and window to make your seat on the plane safer.
