As crew members explain, trash is removed from the seat pocket after a flight, but it is never disinfected or even wiped down. “What they don’t take away are dirty napkins, tissues that someone blew their nose in, socks, chewing gum, half-eaten lollipops and even diapers used. Think twice before putting your phone or laptop in your pocket,” a flight attendant advised.
First, the headrest: In one study, scientists examined more than 100 samples taken from airplane cabins on 18 flights, and that’s where they found the most bacteria, including E.coli.
Secondly, the trays – it turned out that on one square centimeter of their surface live 310 units of colony-forming bacteria – that is, those that are capable of reproduction. Here’s a benchmark for comparison: there are four times less on the toilet seat.
