How to make friends in adult life?

Finishing college and actually entering “adult life” causes many people to have more difficulty making new friends. This feeling is not unjustified, after all at university we are still in the formative years and it is easier to find people with more things in common, be they dreams or the same difficulties.

While many people feel good about living with the few friendships that survive from their youth, many others lose these connections in adulthood and may find the routine a little lonely. Luckily, there are ways to make building new friendships after college easier. The following tips were compiled by psychologist and friendship expert Dr. Irene S. Levine and Bumble friendship experts Danielle Bayard Jackson.

1. Take your time

You have to accept that making friends no longer happens as organically as it did in your youth. This doesn’t mean that friendships will no longer exist, just that you will have to act more proactively to create and maintain them. Understand that when arriving in a new place, adults will be more afraid to open up, so it is important to give them time and not give up on new connections.

2. You are not alone

Most people find themselves in this situation of having few friends. So you’re definitely not the only one having trouble making friends. This means that most people will be open to hooking up when the right opportunity presents itself.

3. Utilize your connections

Are you changing city or country? Be sure to use your social networks to find recommendations on people who can welcome you. Most of your friends will genuinely want to help you and can make connections that will be invaluable in establishing yourself in new contexts.

4. Participate in regular activities

What do work, university and school have in common? Seeing the same people often. Sharing a routine is essential for creating bonds, which can become friendships. With the advent of remote work, many people have distanced themselves from colleagues and missed opportunities to build new friendships. Therefore, looking for activities to do on a daily basis is a great way to make new friends. Plus, you’ll probably do something you enjoy, which already demonstrates a mutual interest.

5. Have you ever thought about a friendship app?

Dating apps don’t have to be just for romantic relationships. They also allow you to connect with like-minded people who are going through the same stages in life and can be a great alternative for those who feel lonely.
