He defeated cancer and turned it into books: ‘I haven’t found any good stories on the subject’

Kamila Nunes has written 2 books about her experience with one of the diseases that most affects women worldwide: breast cancer

In February 2021, Kamila Nunes (33) discovered through an ultrasound that she had two non-palpable lumps in her left breast. Six months later, when she returned for the visit, she also had a lump (this time palpable) in her right breast. When undergoing the biopsy, already resigned to the idea of facing breast cancer, she experienced three fears: of dying, of going bald and of losing her breasts. None of this happened.

Kamila, 31 years old at the time, entered the statistics of breast cancer cases in September 2021. According to the National Cancer Institute (Inca), this is the type of cancer that most affects women around the world. For Brazil, in 2023 alone, 73,610 new cases were estimated, with an estimated risk of 66.54 cases per 100 thousand women.

Healthy, physically active, with no cases in her family or genetic heritage linking her to the disease, Kamila was taken by surprise. And she decided to make the battle an example – or rather: exemplary. She has written two books reporting her experiences with and after treatment. “I decided to write to connect with myself, so that those memories wouldn’t fade in my mind,” she reveals.

“This strengthened me in the long run, because when I revisited those notes, I realized how strong I was. I also decided to write because I couldn’t find any good stories on the topic. We see a lot of anti-cancer stereotypes out there, so I wanted to fight it.

Dealing with the disease

Due to the diagnosis, the journalist from Pernambuco felt “unlucky”; her until she discovered that, in fact, her statistics were in her favor and she had a high chance of remission (about 95%).

“I embraced the opportunity for a cure and continued with treatment. I had the help of a huge support network and it made a total difference to me,” she says. Furthermore, even during chemotherapy treatment, Kamila stopped doing physical activity: “The doctor joked with me by saying that I would leave the hospital and run 5 km, but the truth is that physical activity helped me a lot to deal with the disease.”

She remembers one of the most painful moments of her career, when she told her grandmother that her granddaughter was sick. “This is a diagnosis that affects not only the affected person, but everyone around them. I believe that if the disease “came” to me, it was because I could face it.”

When Kamila discovered that the lump measured less than two centimeters, she had to undergo a conservative surgery called a quadrantectomy – which removes only the part of the breast affected by the cancer. She has also undergone chemotherapy, radiotherapy and continues to take hormone blockers today, in a treatment called hormone therapy.

From journalist to writer

Kamila has written two books about her battle with cancer

For Kamila, the diagnosis was transformative not only because of the fact itself, but also because, when she decided to share her story with other people (first on her personal Instagram, then on @kimiocomk_ and, finally, in her books) , she became what she always dreamed of being, a writer.

But anyone who thinks that Kamila chooses to share only “the light side of treatment” is wrong: “I talked about my battle with the health plan, going to court to get drugs that are not available in the SUS, among other challenges . I feel like I have this mission, to help other people understand that if it worked for me, it will work for them.”

Kamila is the author of “Aquilo Com C” and “Efeito C”.
