Allergies to Halloween makeup

The dermatologist warns of the danger of paints, sprays and makeup.

Halloween, or Halloween, is marked by
costumes and painted faces to get in the mood, but skin care does not stop and, if not used correctly, can cause allergies, irritation and premature aging.

Dr. Adriana Vilarinho, dermatologist, member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD) and the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) reveals that, when using irregular make-up or products not suitable for the skin such as glitter, paints, pencils are not suitable for skin painting face, there is the possibility that the skin absorbs toxic substances and accumulates irritating residues, which can culminate in the appearance of even more serious irritations and allergies. Your doctor’s advice is to use hypoallergenic products, approved for use on the face or hair. Also, don’t forget to always use thermal water and/or light moisturizer at least 10 minutes before application. “When making a different painting, it is essential to use soft sponges and pencils, without forgetting to check the expiry date of the products,” she advises. The great danger is that the symptoms of an allergic reaction to some products are generally not immediate. “Swelling and redness usually appear with cumulative use, with association with medications and/or with exposure to light. Signs and symptoms may appear up to 24 hours after use”, explains Dr. Adriana, who adds : “if the patient notices skin irritation and/or red bruises, the person should immediately seek medical attention, since, like all injuries in medicine, it worsens with time and certain habits, such as exposure to light, itching and others.” The severity of the reactions varies individually and also based on the type of chemical you have been exposed to. “Children, who have thinner and more sensitive skin, are more susceptible to poisoning and irritation, and it is necessary to consult promptly so that appropriate measures can be taken in each case”, she emphasizes. And the warnings don’t end there, even safe and recommended makeup can damage oxygenation, dry out the skin and cause acne and allergies, either due to indiscriminate use, in an unsuitable place or without adequate cleansing. The doctor lists the suggestions:

1- Excess black pencil on the waterline of the eyes

Excessive black pencil on the inner rim can weigh down the look and intensify the area of dark circles, which can become darker and more pronounced.

2- Manually weigh the covering base

To hide all the imperfections, pimples and blackheads, many people end up exaggerating the amount of product, predisposing them to residue accumulation and acne. Ideally, use a more liquid covering, which penetrates less than powder, and of mineral origin, prescribed by your doctor. Don’t forget to wash the sponge and/or brushes frequently. The sequential application of multiple layers of products “saturates” the skin giving it a chapped appearance. At least 10 minutes are needed between applications for the skin to absorb each product.

3- Lipstick accumulated or chapped on the lips

Product build-up or dry lips give you an older look. Additionally, if the woman is unable to achieve a linear contour during application, it could be a sign of lip atrophy, where a loss of contour occurs, which can be improved with lip fillers.

4- Eyebrows that are too strong or filled in age the look

Thick, well-filled eyebrows are in fashion among women and really give a more seductive, wider and more open look. However, overdoing styling and filling your hair can give a fake look and make the look look heavy.

5- Be careful when removing ointments and hair fixatives

Improper washing can cause eye irritation if products come into contact with the eye area. Source:
