Rio: the event celebrates the fashion icon and talks about ageism and violence

OR Ipanema Forum, the iconic gallery in the heart of Rio’s neighborhood – Praça Nossa Senhora da Paz – turns 40 and to celebrate four decades it will hold two fashion shows this Tuesday (7) and inaugurate the exhibition “The beauty of time: 20 women in permanent evolution”, which records the current expressions of a team on photographic panels Models who made the city’s fashion history.

The event, called “Ipanema Forum 40 years”will present the fashion shows in an atmosphere of happening, with the models advancing along the sidewalk of Rua Visconde de Pirajá: one for high summer from the gallery brands, featuring current models, and another from the Rio The Paradise brand, by Thomaz Azulay and Patrick Doering, featuring veterans, presenting a print created to celebrate this moment. Among the old models who will walk the catwalk there will be Silvia Pfeifer.

The 20 totems displayed in the gallery will contain photos of women such as Zezé Motta and Cristiana Oliveira, ambassadors of the exhibition, as well as Silvia Pfeifer, Alexia Deschamps, Magda Cotrofe, the former model Veluma, among other women who have left their mark in these 40 years of fashion From Rio. Each totem will carry phrases and reflections of the women photographed with white shirts in silk, tricoline and 100% linen orfganza, by Aline Rocha, a high luxury shirt brand from Rio. At 59, Aline reinvented herself as a stylist during the pandemic. Coming from the corporate world, during the pandemic she started hand-painting white shirts to sell to her friends. Most of the sentences refer to the personal experiences of the subjects portrayed, in relation to the violence suffered, their age and the passage of time. “I suffered abuse at the age of 8 in Porto Alegre. And then, at 21, in the first modeling agency I worked for, in Paris. In Italy I also experienced this. I believe that by talking about our experiences and insecurities we give voice to many other women and help them fight the violence they suffer”, reports Silvia Pfeifer.

Sensitive to the role of women of all backgrounds, whether they are entrepreneurs, designersmodels, sellers or workers – in building Ipanema’s global fame as a fashion Mecca and lifestyle carioca, the event “Ipanema Forum 40 years” has partnered with the Secretariat of State for Women and the RioSolidário Program to develop dissemination and awareness activities against domestic violence suffered by women in vulnerable situations during this celebration. This segment of the event will be sponsored by entrepreneur, activist and model Luiza Brunet and artist Isabela Francisco, ambassadors of the Secretary of State for Women.

Cristiana Oliveira

” Actions against violence against women, such as those of RioSolidário and Casa Abrigo Lar da Mulher, a temporary residential shelter in a reserved place for women and their children who suffer domestic violence – supported and present at the Forum Ipanema event – are examples concrete that our struggle has begun and that its fruits will be reaped by our daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren”, said Zezé Motta. “The photographic exhibition”The beauty of time: 21 women in constant evolution“‘from models or former models who today continue to work in the most diverse activities comes a message with three signs. The first: that the fullness of life for women does not end with the end of youth and fertility as does patriarchal culture and ageist preaching centuries. Secondly: that we women cannot continue to hide the violence suffered that surrounds us at all times. Secondly: that we must join forces so that our requests for support to the most vulnerable women, such as the poorest or those without income, are increasingly served in projects such as RioSolidário and Casa Abrigo Lar da Mulher”, said Cristiana Oliveira.

We are in tune with the Fashion Council created by the Rio City Hall and are available to many initiatives. To achieve this goal, there is nothing like saving the History of Carioca Fashion, essential so that the next generations can better understand what is to come, looking back. The Ipanema Forum is an essential chapter in this journey and we still have much story to tell,” he said.
