The singer Ludmilla and his wife, the dancer Brunna Gonçalves, intend to expand their family and, to do so, they will begin a fertilization process to get pregnant and realize their dream of becoming mothers.
“Assisted reproduction for same-sex couples has been legal in Brazil since 2015 thanks to a resolution of the Federal Council of Medicine. And, due to the bureaucracy in the adoption process, the search for human reproduction clinics by this public has increased significantly in recent years,” he explains. Rodrigo Rosahuman reproduction specialist and clinical director of the Clínica Mater Prime, in Sao Paulo.
In the case of female homosexual couples, the assisted reproduction process is simpler than that of male couples, since all that is needed is sperm donation which, like egg donation, is carried out anonymously through material banks.
“With sperm, the couple can choose two methods: in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IU),” explains the specialist.
What is each process like?
In in vitro fertilization, the egg is fertilized in the laboratory and inserted into the uterus of one of the spouses, who will carry the child. “After about 15 days it is already possible to verify the success of the operation,” explains the specialist.
Additionally, the same-sex couple who chooses IVF can still carry out a shared pregnancy, a process in which one of the women gives up the egg while the other is responsible for gestating the baby, according to Rodrigo Rosa.
The other option for same-sex couples is intrauterine insemination, popularly known as artificial insemination.
“The operation essentially consists of inserting the donated sperm into the uterine cavity during the woman’s ovulation period, so that fertilization occurs naturally, and in some cases it is necessary for ovulation to be previously stimulated through a treatment pharmacological”, explains the expert.

Finally, it is important to underline that the decision on assisted reproduction and the choice of procedure rests exclusively with the couple.
“They must discuss all issues relating to treatment in depth with the doctor,” concludes Rodrigo Rosa.
