Luana Andrade, digital influencer and former participant of Power Couple Brasil, on TV Record, died in the first week of November, at the age of 29. She suffered four cardiac arrests immediately after liposuction.

Luana’s death reopens the debate on the procedure. Liposuction is a common procedure in the field of plastic surgery used to remove unwanted fat deposits. Although it is a relatively safe procedure, it is important to understand the risks associated with this surgery.

Here are some of the main risks of liposuction:

Anesthetic complications

Before liposuction, patients generally undergo general or local anesthesia. Anesthesia-related complications can occur, although they are rare. These can include allergic reactions, breathing problems, or even adverse drug reactions.

Hematomas and seromas

After liposuction, the formation of hematomas (accumulation of blood) and seromas (accumulation of clear fluid) is possible. While generally treatable, these complications can increase recovery time and, in rare cases, require drainage.

Infection

As with any surgical procedure, there is a risk of infection. Patients are usually prescribed antibiotics to help prevent infections, but it is critical to follow postoperative medical instructions to minimize this risk.

Irregularities on the surface of the skin

In some cases, irregularities on the surface of the skin may occur after liposuction. This may include dimpling, dipping, or discoloration. These irregularities may require further corrections.

Injuries to internal organs

Although rare, liposuction can cause damage to internal organs during the fat removal process. Surgeons take steps to prevent this, but it is a risk to consider.

Adverse drug reactions

Some patients may experience adverse reactions to prescribed medications during the recovery process. It is essential to report any side effects to your doctor immediately.

Healing problems

Some patients may experience healing problems, resulting in visible scarring and a prolonged recovery period.

It is vital to discuss these risks in detail with a qualified plastic surgeon before deciding on liposuction. Each person is unique and individual risks may vary. Thoroughly understanding the risks and choosing an experienced surgeon are essential steps to ensuring safe and effective liposuction.
