Suzana Barelli explains how to avoid counterfeit products and apply cost-benefit ratio
In most cases, promotions are good opportunities to purchase wines. But to be truly satisfied with your purchase it is important to take some precautions, especially during periods of great offers, such as Black Friday.
“In principle, the wine for sale is a product that the retailer could not deliver and needs to dispose of stocks,” explains Suzana Barelli, columnist and winemaker at Paladar.
For her, there are plenty of reasons to buy wine on Black Friday, especially with the deep discounts. But it is undeniable that, alongside good opportunities, consumers run the risk of being harmed by “false promotions” and misleading products.
Suzana explains that you need to be very careful to avoid the scams contained in low-price offers. Among the main points is the supply of wine. “There are cases where the store owner wants to get rid of a label because he has lost his representation in Brazil (in many cases, importers have the exclusivity to bring the wines here, and when a producer changes importer, the company previous promotes it wine)”, says Suzana.
Therefore, the first expert advice is avoid buying older vintages, mainly white wines. ”I would at most buy whites from the 2020 or more recent vintage. Red wine, from 2018 onwards”, comments the expert.
“This is because we don’t know how the bottles were stored during this period. When the promotion is good and lasts longer, you can buy a bottle, test it and, if the wine is good, buy others. But on promotion for one day, like on Black Friday, you can’t do that, so it’s not worth the risk.”
The second point to which the consumer must pay attention to bottle analysis. A torn label does not necessarily mean spoiled wine, but it indicates poor care of the bottle. “Poorly stored wine deteriorates. Visually, look especially at the cork. If it is lower or bulging, these are signs that the wine may not be good.”
The same goes for the quantity of wine in the bottle. Liquid under the “shoulder” of the container is a sign of a problem. Suzana warns that this interpretation applies especially to younger wines.
The third tip concerns contraband bottles. In recent years, according to the expert, the number of illegal products of this type has increased significantly in Brazil.
“The best way to ensure the authenticity of the bottle is to check whether the wine has a back label in Portuguese, indicating that it was imported through official channels.”
And finally, Price research is always a welcome activity. Do some research on pricing beforehand. Unfortunately, there are cases of stores changing the price weeks in advance. So, do your research, gather these tips, and have fun filling your cellar.
