Cellulite: new techniques now act on different layers

The doctor emphasizes that new technologies make it possible to treat skin undulations from the muscle area to the surface

Medical technologies for the aesthetic treatment of cellulite have existed for a few decades, but only in recent years have dermatological studies managed to act on all layers, treating the surface, the adipose layer and the muscle layer.

Cellulite, which is characterized when the skin has a wavy and grainy appearance on the thighs, hips, buttocks and stomach, does not yet have a cure, but it can be controlled.

“The progress in treating cellulite with technology is remarkable. The advantages are many such as: speed, effectiveness, low levels of pain and very short recovery times. Furthermore, the combinations allow complementary results, acting on different layers of the skin. What we see on the surface as cellulite is just the tip of the iceberg of changes happening on a deeper level,” he explains. Abdo Solomon Jr.Doctorate in Dermatology from the University of São Paulo (USP) and member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology.

The doctor explains that the pathophysiology of cellulite involves the accumulation of localized fat and toxins in the area, anatomical problems that facilitate the breaking of fibrous connections, sagging and circulation difficulties; Therefore, medical diagnosis is important to indicate a treatment plan that includes action at all levels.

“When treating cellulite it is essential to adapt the approach to the needs of each patient, offering a highly personalized treatment. For example, an imbalance in body composition, with low lean mass, can favor the appearance of cellulite, even in thinner patients. In these cases we can strengthen the muscles even in the office”, underlines Abdo.

Available technologies

To target the muscle layer, HIFEM (High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic) technology, available in medical clinics with the T Sculptor, allows the patient to perform a much stronger and heavier workout than they would be able to do in the gym.

“The non-invasive technology, when it comes into contact with the skin, generates a high intensity focused electromagnetic field capable of stimulating the muscle through continuous and intense contractions. This muscle hypertrophy helps to reorganize the tissues and improve the appearance of the skin”, explains the dermatologist.

Ultra-focused ultrasound works on cellulite in several ways, treating fat, stimulating collagen and bonding muscle to skin. According to the dermatologist, the Atria device delivers energy in a pulsed manner, with the same effectiveness and less pain.

“Atria acts on cellulite in different ways. First, the ultrasound heats the fat to 65ºC, promoting its degradation, thus reducing the amount of adipose tissue in the treated area. With the 6 and 9mm cartridges, ultrasound breaks down the fibrotic bundles of cellulite, those that pull the skin inwards and cause holes. Furthermore, heat can also be applied to more superficial layers of the skin, improving surface tension and causing tissue retraction, helping to improve its firmness. This results in a restructuring of all layers, resulting in an improvement in cellulite and the appearance of the skin as a whole, also reducing sagging skin and fat,” says the doctor.

Newly launched platform

Another strategy is Megaderme radiofrequency microneedling, a recently launched platform.

“In it, microneedles go beyond the first layer of the skin, providing energy to the deeper layers, which reach 7 millimeters deep. In addition to treating fat, shortening adipocytes and improving fat inflammation, it opens channels for some anti-cellulite drugs that can be deposited immediately after the technology comes into force,” explains the doctor.

This stimulates collagen, reduces fat and breaks down fibrous septae.

Finally, the doctor reminds us that technologies can be associated, but it is very important that the doctor advises the patient on changes in diet and lifestyle, especially with the adoption of frequent physical activity.

“It is essential that the patient is aware of the importance of changing their lifestyle,” concludes Abdo Salomão.
