More convenience during nights with the baby and a little more sleep for parents. Discover the co-sleeper models and consult the main guidelines
Coming home with a newborn in your arms is, without a doubt, the beginning of a cycle of tasks that, for some time, will seem interminable. Breastfeeding, changing, going to sleep… Repetitive tasks that make no distinction between day and night. Therefore, any convenience is welcome – and With the baby near the cot everything becomes easier in the early hours of the morning.
Furthermore, the pediatrician and neonatologist Tatiana Cicerelli Marchini reminds us that the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics recommends keeping the baby in the parents’ room – especially in the first six months – for reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). It affects babies up to one year of age and the cause has not yet been fully determined, although it is known that there are risk factors, such as sleeping on the stomach or with objects such as blankets and pillows in the cot.
It is important to highlight that even bed sharing – which is part of the routine of many families – is seen as a worrying factor, “precisely because it increases the risk of SIDS. This type of death can occur through suffocation from pillows and sheets or even through contact with the parents’ body during sleep”, recalls Tatiana. Those who choose this practice, therefore, you have to be very careful.
With this in mind, cribs that can be attached to the bed (also called “co-sleepers”) are a great choice. They guarantee practicality, vigilance and safety of the child, which has its own well-defined space. When looking for the ideal model for the family, it is important to check whether it has an opening side and a structure that guarantees good ventilation. It is worth noting that, unlike traditional cribs, attachable cribs (as well as cribs) are not covered by Inmetro certification standards.
