The importance of sleep in everyday life is often underestimated and even overlooked. But sleeping well not only impacts our physical well-being, it improves empathy, creativity, parenting skills and the quality of relationships.

According to Aric Prather, a psychologist at the University of California (USA) specializing in the treatment of insomnia, simple and unusual activities during the day and night can improve the quality of sleep without the use of drugs. Putting your head in the freezer is one of them.

Throughout the day, Prather recommends setting aside time for “scheduled worries,” taking 10 to 20 minutes to write or think about worries without looking for solutions.

Instead of caffeine in the afternoon, the psychologist suggests alternatives such as a brisk walk or even putting the head in the freezer to activate the arousal system, which will make the person wake up and negate the need for caffeine.

“If you usually drink coffee in the afternoon, you will still have caffeine in your body before you go to sleep,” says the expert.

The researcher also suggests a two-hour transition period before going to bed to reduce stress. Contrary to the warning about screen time in bed, Prather believes the most important thing is to choose to watch your favorite show, to avoid mental agitation.

In persistent cases, he suggests seeking out therapists or doctors who specialize in cognitive behavioral therapy, ensuring that even in chronic cases, poor sleep is treatable.
