The psychiatrist explains how normal the irritation that affects many people at the end of the year is
At the end of the year, after several months of commitments, responsibilities and problems, it is natural to feel tired and even a little irritated, but when can this irritability become a warning sign? Psychiatrist Dr. Naiayde Monte, specialist in mood disorders at USP, explains this. “Irritation is something we can all experience when faced with certain stimuli and contexts, but it tends to be temporary and does not have major repercussions on our lives,” he explains, adding that “When this irritation becomes persistent, it causes suffering and/or damage to relationships, work, and other activities, it’s time to stop and investigate the cause.” Especially when outbursts of anger occur, with verbal or even physical violence, the psychiatrist emphasizes that it is important to seek medical help. “This irritation can often lead to conflicts with those around you, disagreements at work, arguments in relationships, with unpredictable consequences,” she adds. When it’s not normal, irritation is accompanied by other symptoms, such as changes in sleep, appetite, motivation and thoughts. “In these cases we need to delve deeper into some disorders, such as bipolar disorder,” she concludes.
