The film will be released on December 28 […]
Just as the voice warns Worn out, at the very beginning of ‘Mamonas Assassinas: the Movie,’ it seems like yesterday that those five young men “crossed the ocean.” In a time without smartphones nor social media, the quintet went from meteoric fame to national buzz in less than a year.
In March 1996, this career irreverent group it was interrupted by a tragic plane crash in Cantareira, while the musicians were returning from a show in Brasilia.
But almost three decades later, the band, which still has thousands of listeners on streaming platforms, streaming of music, you will get a new version of your story. On December 28, ‘Mamonas Assassinas: o Filme’, directed by Edson Spinello, will premiere in more than 800 cinemas in Brazil.
On December 13th Travel by fare was present at the press conference which took place in Sao Paulo in the presence of Spinello, the producer Walkiria Barbosa and part of the cast, who told, among other topics, interesting facts and behind-the-scenes details.
But that is not all.
There should be one soon audio movie with the songs sung in the film, interspersed with dialogues from the film and, as also announced by the producer, an extended version in the form of a series will be released in 2025, with other stories that do not appear in the film.
Curiosities about ‘Mamonas Assassinas: the film’
The entire film was shot in Guarulhos, because “it didn’t make sense to take them away from there”, as recalled by Walkiria, who lived in the band’s city of Greater São Paulo during the four months of production.
“The city embraced me and there I discovered that it is very special, where 2/3 are APA (Environmental Protection Area),” he said, referring to the Cabuçu Center of the Cantareira State Park.
And the same Cantareira who took those kids away, prematurely, now brings them back, in the form of a biopic.
“Guarulhos loves Mamona, and wherever I went, I was always approached by someone who had some connection to one of the musicians,” recalls Walkiria, who also art directed the film.
One of Guarulhos’ addresses that appears in the film is the Ginásio Poliesportivo Paschoal Thomeo, Thomeuzão, where the then musical group Utopia learned from an employee that it was a place for big bands.
Years later, in January 1996, Mamonas performed on site in front of 18 thousand people and with the band… opening for Utopia. The show became known for the outburst in which Dinho sits on the edge of the stage and gives a speech about not giving up on his dreams.
As Spinello stated during the press conference, the support of the musicians’ families was also fundamental throughout the entire production process, from the script to the recordings.
“There was always someone from the family who hugged the actors and brought personal information. In a biopic you need to have this support”, defined the director.
One of the most emblematic cases was the meeting between the actor and singer Ruy Brissac and the mother of the Mamonas singer, who was struck by the resemblance between the actor and her son. It is starting from this meeting, for example, that Ruy incorporates into his text the expression “mother”, as Dinho, born in Irecê, Bahia, called Dona Célia.
Another curiosity concerns the guitarist Bento, originally from Itaquaquecetuba and in the film played by his nephew Beto Hinoto, whose numerous tattoos on his body required the actor to reach set to two hours before for long makeup sessions.
With more than 70 sets, ‘Mamonas Assassinas: o Filme’ features a costume made up of around a thousand pieces, including products made for the film and originals donated by the musicians’ families, such as the bassist Samuel’s jacket that the actor Adriano Tunes wears in the famous farewell scene at the airport.
Producer Walkiria also pointed out that all of the band’s songs sung in the film were recorded by the cast, subsequently mixed by award-winning sound engineer Gabriel Pinheiro, winner of two Latin Grammys for his mixing work with Edu Lobo and Chico Buarque.
The members of the original Mamonas lineup are played by Ruy Brissac (Dinho) and Adriano Tunes (Samuel), who had already participated in the ‘Musical Mamonas’, in 2016, directed by José Possi Neto, as well as Beto Hinoto (Bento ), Rhener Freitas (Sérgio) and Robson Lima (Júlio Rasec).
“Our concern was finding the right people for those roles. And it was magical when we shot the first show, where the crew and extras were very emotional, we were sure that Mamona were there with us,” describes Walkiria.
And yellow Brasilia?
Die-hard fans of Mamonas Assassinas should not be disappointed by the various references to the band members.
Filled with the band’s hits, the film features original costumes and a convincing cast, in which Ruy Brissac’s striking resemblance to singer Dinho stands out (a mother’s heart is not fooled) and Beto Hinoto’s body preparation, who plays Uncle Bento.
But those who come from other generations, before or after the band, could lose the thread, in a script that seems more concerned with focusing on personal conflicts, such as romantic relationships and family dramas.
There is a lot of personal life, but the Mamona is missing.
Despite starting five years before the creation of the quintet, the film’s screenplay is a collage of biographical events that starts from the history of the band Utopia and takes off with a speed that almost does not touch the final phase of their career, such as the excess of shows and the accident in Cantareira.
Ok, the film is not a social analysis on cultural massification, much less an investigative documentary on the plane crash that killed the band members, but we cannot ignore the fact that Cantareira’s death contributed to an even greater interest in Mamona. .
And to leave this only in the thumbnail images in the credits is to diminish the monumentality of the quintet.
As it couldn’t be any different in a biopic about musicians who went from progressive rock to debauchery, the film deviates from traditional editing and offers the audience an abridged edition that, at times, makes the audience feel as if they are in a situation difficult. recorded show.
There is a lot of music, but there is no approach that corresponds to that musical phenomenon that was overexposed by the media at the time.
Brazilian fans and nostalgics should enjoy watching “Mamonas Assassinas: the Movie,” but don’t expect anything more than a lukewarm story about one of the most popular Brazilian bands to date.
And, at the end of the session, I left feeling like I had learned more about Guarulhos than Mamonas Assassinas.
