According to the vet, it is not customary to protect the ears directly. But it is also possible put some cotton swabs into the pet’s ear canals to reduce stress for the pet.
“However, it is important to underline that the operation must be carried out carefully and, subsequently, it is essential to completely remove the earplugs once the noise has stopped, so as not to cause ear infection problems for the animal”, explains Aline.
Furthermore, for animals that are very stressed by fireworks, it is possible to adopt some measures to try to calm them. “It is possible to promote adaptations in the environment in which the animals stay, such as: leave doors and windows closed; swimming pool lining; do not leave them tied to chains; and keep more aggressive animals separated from others so they don’t fight“, says the expert.
Turning on the TV or listening to music at a higher volume to drown out the noise from fireworks is also a good idea. “It is important to welcome the most ‘fearful’ animals and, if they become very stressed, seek out a vet. He will evaluate the possibility of treating them with an anxiolytic, obviously always under the control of a specialized and trusted professional.”, he concludes.
