The ideal time does not depend on the season, but rather on the inflammatory profile of each patient.
Many people take advantage of the months of December and January to carry out cosmetic procedures, especially plastic surgery, as the period of recreation and holidays allows for the necessary rest after this type of procedure. But this is also the hottest time of the year, coinciding with the arrival of summer. And every plastic surgery enthusiast has heard warnings about undergoing cosmetic procedures this season.
So, after all, can plastic surgery be performed in the summer? According to the Brazilian Association of Plastic Surgery (BAPS), yes, without problems.
“There is no limiting factor to performing plastic surgery in the summer. The right time to undergo surgery is the best one for the patient, when he has time and can follow the pre- and post-operative recommendations, regardless of the season,” says plastic surgeon Antonio Marcos Pinto Coelho Júnior, member of the Brazilian Association of Plastic Surgery ( BAPS), ambassador of Functional Plastic Surgery and specialist in Body and Breast Surgery
How did this myth arise?
The doctor explains that this idea arose due to the effects of high temperatures on the body, especially in the postoperative period.
“High temperatures favor the appearance of swelling, especially in patients already predisposed to fluid retention. The heat and increased sweating during this period can also cause some discomfort when wearing compression garments, which are necessary in the postoperative period of many body surgeries to help shape the body, control swelling and ensure better results,” says the specialist.
It is for these reasons that many people choose to have plastic surgery in the fall and winter, when the weather is warmer.
However, having raised these points, BAPS emphasizes that there is no reason not to undergo plastic surgery in the summer, simply paying particular attention to maintaining comfort and safety in the postoperative period. And one of the main factors for the success and safety of plastic surgery is adequate preoperative preparation.
“I always teach my fellow plastic surgeons how to de-inflame the patient before surgery so that it can be performed more safely. The risk of operations does not increase during hot seasons, but increases if the patient undergoes the operation at the wrong time,” explains Antonio Marcos.
He explains that the ideal time is when the patient has recovered from the inflammation and has the appropriate weight and fat percentage to perform the surgery in question.
“The inflammatory profile of patients is evaluated through various laboratory tests that allow us to analyze vitamins, hormones, inflammatory markers and blood sugar levels, as well as body composition through bioimpedance tests. After interpreting all the data, it is possible to draw up a personalized pre-operative plan for each patient, with the introduction of supplements, adequate diet, physical activity, water intake, sleep regulation and intestinal habits.”
Easier postoperative period
In addition to undergoing the surgery more safely, the patient with inflammation will also have a quieter post-operative period with less pain, reduced swelling, lower complication rates, greater skin retraction, better quality scars and an earlier return to activities daily.
“Regarding post-operative care in summer, it is also essential to pay particular attention to photoprotection, since sun exposure and UV radiation levels are higher, which can favor complications such as the appearance of post-operative spots and darkening of the skin. scars,” warns Antonio.
It is therefore essential to avoid sun exposure as much as possible in the first three months following the operation and, after this period, always protect the operated area with at least SPF 30 sun cream and clothing with UV protection.
Pay attention to hydration
Another care that should receive more attention after plastic surgery in summer is hydration.
“The high temperatures and, consequently, the increased sweating during the season favor the dehydration of the body. It is therefore important to drink plenty of fluids, which is essential for reducing swelling and recovery after surgery. To combat swelling, lymphatic drainage sessions may also be recommended,” advises the plastic surgeon.
And no matter how hot it gets, it’s important to continue using compression garments as recommended by your doctor. To deal with the heat, it is best to leave the windows open or use a fan and air conditioning. But going to the pool or beach is completely contraindicated because, in addition to intense exposure to the sun, in these places there is a greater risk of infections.
“I have clinics in Ribeirão Preto and Bauru, inland from São Paulo, two cities that are extremely hot every month of the year, and my patients progress adequately and with minimal swelling. The key to achieving a quick and smooth recovery is to follow all the surgeon’s pre- and post-operative recommendations,” he adds.
Be careful when choosing a professional
Finally, BAPS emphasizes that, since the most important thing to ensure a quick and safe recovery is to carefully follow the recommendations of your doctor, it is essential to pay particular attention when choosing the professional who will carry out the procedure, after all he will be responsible for ensuring that everything proceeds smoothly, from pre to post-operative.
“Look for an experienced and appropriately qualified plastic surgeon. To be sure, good advice is to check if the professional has an RQE, which is the qualification record of the specialty”, advises Antonio Marcos Pinto Coelho Júnior.
Furthermore, it is worth exploring the social networks of doctors to evaluate their position and position and check the experiences of former patients. And with the recent changes by the Federal Council of Medicine (FMC) regarding medical advertising, doctors will soon also be able to publish “before and after” photos and show their daily work on social media, something that BAPS has supported since its creation, in 2022.
«So pay attention to the professional’s social networks before choosing them to carry out a procedure, but don’t rely on the number of followers and likes», he concludes.
