The expert gives 5 tips to get rid of water retention and lose weight quickly. Watch step by step
If there’s one defining characteristic of the holidays, it’s abundance. This is because, generally, tables are full of dishes and drinks, which ends up causing us to consume excessive sugar, fat and alcohol. The consequences appear with the first edemas. Fortunately, it is possible to deflate your body through simple actions.
Andryely Pedroso, nutritionist and technical consultant at Desinchá, gives 5 tips for those who overindulged at the end of the year and are now trying to lose weight. However, first of all, it is important to understand why swelling occurs.
What causes fluid retention (swelling)?
According to the expert, fluid retention is a common problem after a period of excessive eating, such as high consumption of sugar, sodium and alcohol. “The body begins to retain water between the cells and the result is a feeling of swelling in the body, especially in the extremities such as the feet and hands and in areas such as the belly and face,” he says.
According to the professional, sometimes this fluid retention can generate visible edema, capable of leaving the skin shiny due to the accumulation of water in specific points of the body.
5 steps to lose weight fast
If you have overdone it at the end of the year and are trying to lose weight quickly, the specialist teaches you some tricks that can help you eliminate fluid retention. Watch:
1. Drink 40 ml of water per kilogram of body weight
The more water you drink, the less water your body will hold. Therefore, to avoid dehydration and fluid retention, the nutritionist recommends drinking approximately 40 ml of water for every kilogram of body weight.
Also, stay well hydrated throughout the day. If you prefer, you can add citrus fruits to flavor your water or include unsweetened teas in this daily water intake goal. Drinking water regularly helps signal to your body that you don’t need to retain fluids. Avoid drinking water only when you are thirsty, as thirst is a late sign of dehydration.
2. Consume diuretic fruits and vegetables
Try to include fruits and vegetables in your diet that are high in water and low in carbohydrates, with natural diuretic properties, such as watermelon, melon, pineapple, apple, carrot, beetroot, cucumber and tomato. These foods stimulate urine production and help eliminate retained fluids.
3. Avoid ultra-processed foods, salt and sugar
Ultra-processed foods, rich in sodium and refined sugars, can increase fluid retention and inflammation in the body. Therefore, avoid consuming foods such as sausages, sweets, preserved foods, refined pasta and alcoholic beverages.
4. Drink diuretic and antioxidant teas
In addition to increasing the intake of water and diuretic foods, include herbal teas with diuretic properties in your routine, which stimulate greater elimination of water and toxins through urine (diuresis), contributing to the body’s water balance.
In addition to their diuretic benefits, these herbs also provide phytochemicals, natural substances that fight inflammation and prevent damage caused by holiday excess. Andryely gives some examples of tea:
- Green tea: rich in catechins, green tea has antioxidant, stimulant and diuretic properties that help eliminate retained fluids.
- Carqueja: Carqueja is recognized for its diuretic, digestive, hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties.
- Horsetail: Horsetail is known for its natural therapeutic abilities, providing support for bone health, relieving fluid retention, and promoting healthy skin.
- Hibiscus: Hibiscus tea, made from the flowers of the Hibiscus sabdariffa plant, is known for its many health benefits. In addition to its diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties, hibiscus tea can help control cholesterol levels and digestive health.
5. Practice physical exercise and use natural stimulants
Practicing physical exercise, especially aerobic activities such as walking, running, swimming and cycling, can significantly improve blood circulation and the elimination of retained fluids, because muscle movement during exercise stimulates the lymphatic system, helping to eliminate fluids held back.
Another way to relax your body after the end-of-year excesses is to practice physical exercise using natural stimulant supplements. It is important to note that some people have contraindications to consuming stimulants, such as caffeine, so seek professional help before using any dietary supplement.
Among the best stimulant supplements to optimize physical exercise are those based on coffee and caffeine, a natural stimulant substance present, for example, in coffee and green tea. “You can choose a supplement with time release caffeine, which slowly releases the stimulant, or green coffee, which is rich in chlorogenic acid, an antioxidant with anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties”, explains the nutritionist.
