A resident of Praia Grande, on the coast of Sao Paulo, will have his index finger amputated after being bitten by a spider while he slept. Wilker Guimarães, 31, reported that he was the victim of medical negligence when he twice went to the Samambaia Emergency Care Unit (UPA) without receiving adequate treatment. Only on the third visit to the doctor, at the Central UPA, he claims to have been directed to receive an anti-arachnid serum, but the necrosis had already compromised the limb.
In an interview with Earth, says that on December 28 he woke up with a spider bite on his finger, accompanied by excruciating pain. “She throbbed so much I couldn’t go back to sleep,” he recalls.
The first trip to UPA Samambaia occurred a few hours after the bite. “I told her it was a bite and it hurt a lot, I was shaking in pain. First the nurse gave me the small emergency bracelet. Then the doctor prescribed me some medicine, but nothing specific for the case” said Wilker . Failure to improve led him to return to the ward, where he was given another prescription, but his condition worsened.
“I decided to go to the doctor again, but this time to the Central UPA. When I got there, they gave me the yellow bracelet, which indicated the severity. I was sent to the Emergency Room Quietude, a reference point in the anti-arachnid serum in Praia Grande,” Wilker explained.
The treatment received at Quietude was adequate, however, it did not prevent the progression of the necrosis. “My finger was practically purple when I woke up. I was hospitalized, waiting for a bed for amputation surgery,” she said.
Initially scheduled for the 4th, the operation was postponed after analyzes by the surgeons at the Irmã Dulce Hospital, where he is currently hospitalized. In a conversation with the surgeon, Wilker says it was decided to pursue additional treatment before the amputation, to avoid unnecessary interventions or multiple future surgeries.
Now, Wilker is making a online fundraising campaign be able to provide for his basic expenses, since he works as a waiter and cannot carry out his job due to the necrosis of his finger.
In a note, the Department of Public Health (Sesap) of Praia Grande informs that the patient was the victim of a spider bite lesion, which progressed to necrosis of the left toe, unrelated to the administration of the serum at the beginning of the pathology . . “The patient is hospitalized under orthopedic care awaiting delimitation of the necrosis due to amputation of the affected finger”, we read in the file. Regarding the accusation of medical negligence, Sesap informs that it will investigate the case.
