Enoteca Maria, in New York, brings with it the concept that no one cooks a tastier meal better than a grandmother
Can you imagine going to a restaurant run only by your grandparents? It will not affect the affection and tasty food on the table.
This is what happens at Enoteca Maria, in New York, which initially had dishes prepared by Italian grandmothers and now has grandparents from various parts of the world: Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan, Trinidad, Syria and Japan are some of these.
“We are not chefs. We are just grandparents who share our culture, ”said Maral Tseylikman in the restaurant where he has worked for seven years in an interview with the Today website.
The place brings with it the concept that no one cooks a tastier meal better than a grandmother.
That’s why the team has a rotation of grandfathers – or grandmothers – who cook meals with affection.
Restaurant owner Joe Scaravella started the project to honor his Italian heritage and his late grandmother, mother and sister.
“Often these women have empty children, their husbands are already dead. Their children are gone,” Scaravella said, explaining that the grandmothers feel useful and receive a lot of affection from customers.
“So they are really looking for a way out and they have it here. And you know, if they don’t hug me, they hug their customers,” she adds.
For those who have a favorite grandmother, the restaurant has a “grandmother calendar” that tells diners which grandmother will be that evening.
Among the dishes served, Italian cuisine is the strong point: various pastas, lasagna, gnocchi, meatballs are some of the options and even grandmothers from other countries prepare dishes from their regions.
