Urological emergencies require rapid diagnosis and immediate treatment
Urological emergencies are events that require emergency medical care, as they require rapid diagnosis and immediate treatment to avoid complications.
The most common urinary infections are:
• Cystitis: It affects only the lower urinary tract, such as the bladder. The clinical symptoms are mild, generally burning during urination, low volume, presence of blood and constant need to go to the bathroom;
• Pyelonephritis: It consists of an infection of the kidney and generally causes more serious symptoms, with fever, general malaise, prostration and pain. The cause is often bacterial and can start with simple cystitis.
“In both cases, the rapid intervention of a specialist, with the help of laboratory tests, is extremely important, since such infections can quickly become more serious,” explains Rodrigo Wilson Andrade, urologist at the Albert Sabin Hospital (HAS ) of Sao Paulo.
When it comes to pyelonephritis, since it is a serious infection, in the most sensitive patients, such as diabetics, immunocompromised people and the elderly, there is a risk that it will develop into a generalized infection and generate sequelae.
“For this and other reasons, urgent treatment is extremely necessary,” warns the HAS doctor.
In young patients without comorbidities, treatment is outpatient and the specialist prescribes antibiotics to be administered at home. However, in the elderly and/or in those with poor health, hospitalization for the application of intravenous antibiotics, imaging tests and collection of material for culture is ideal. It is also important to evaluate the patient’s hydration and nutrition conditions.
As far as prevention is concerned, factors such as good nutrition, correct hydration, quality of sleep and physical activity must be taken seriously.
“Preventing cystitis, which is the most common urinary infection, is the main way to prevent pyelonephritis, the most serious form of the disease,” says Rodrigo.
Another important prevention factor is that women are always up to date with gynecological visits and exams, since this type of infection mainly affects patients of this sex.
“Furthermore, although little discussed, the bacteria that cause urinary infections are the same ones present in the intestine. Therefore it is essential to maintain a regular intestinal rhythm. Women with colds or a lot of diarrhea, for example, are more exposed to such infections,” concludes the urologist.
