The Italian rapper Fedez declared on Tuesday (27) that mental health is little taken into consideration in Italy.
He stated this during a meeting with 370 high school students in Turin.
“Mental health and physical health should go hand in hand, but mental health is not considered in this country. I had to deal with a very rare pancreatic tumor and had to deal with the possibility of death.
During that time I had the worst experience with psychiatric drugs.
I took up to seven and the doctor who gave it to me didn’t understand that I was sick,” he said.
The singer responded to young people’s questions on the topic, stating that “mental health is not taken into consideration by the media and politics, because it doesn’t get votes or money”.
He also advised those suffering from depression to seek treatment, because the disease cannot be addressed only with motivational advice: “If you are prescribed drugs, don’t abandon therapy.”
“Every time I took a medicine it caused me adverse reactions. And the doctor, to treat the reaction, prescribed me another medicine. In reality I took a lot of them and I got sick. I stopped taking them all at once, without gradual withdrawal”, he also said.
“It was terrible. It’s like you’re detoxing from heroin. I spent 10 days in bed without being able to get up, I couldn’t distinguish reality from dreams. Dreams seemed more real than reality. Horrible experience,” he concluded .
