Meet the woman behind Brazil’s first artisanal sake

At Liberdade, Sake Fair carries the national label among more than 40 Japanese options

Rita Lee would say that women are strange creatures. Where did a doctor from Rio Grande do Sul, specializing in fetal medicine, become the first person (not just a woman) to produce artisanal sake in Brazil?

Inspired by a legendary 12th century samurai, Tomoe Gozen, particularly beautiful and agile with bows and swords, Patrícia Telló brings her Tomoe to the Sake Fair 2024.

Among the over 40 labels present at the first fair organized by Japanese sake producers in Sao Paulo – an event taking place today and tomorrow at the Nikkey Palace Hotel, in the Liberdade neighborhood – there is the crazy one Patrícia.

Really crazy, imagine a doctor who fell in love with the drink – first in Brazil, then in the United States and who, in the midst of the pandemic, entered a factory in Japan to learn how to produce it.

In five years there has been a lot of reading, training, trying (including planting and polishing rice on the balcony) and, inevitably, one or two bad things. Until we get to the first 100% Brazilian “artisanal sake”.

Tomoe is produced in a Porto Alegre brewery, Devaneio do Velhaco, from an exclusive Brazilian rice, supplied by Embrapa, which has short and rounded grains, as per tradition. The variety? She doesn’t reveal it even under torture.

“My brewing partners and I have the same philosophy. Mainly that of producing with creativity. Through this project, we want to further promote the Japanese drink among Brazilians, showing innovation with ingredients coming from here, without damaging the culture and ancient traditions of production of sake,” explains Patricia.

There at the fair your creation will not be for sale, but available for tasting. Bottles worth R$65 can be ordered directly on the Rio Grande do Sul brewery page (www.devaneiodovelhaco.com.br).
