Architects Carina and Ieda Korman clarify the difference between the devices and explain when to choose them
With the promise of longer, sunnier days, tropical summer is accompanied by intense heat that immediately sends us back to beaches, pools, shade and recreational activities to temper the high thermometer. But at home there is always the dilemma: air conditioning or ceiling fan?
According to architects Carina and Ieda Korman, who together lead the Korman Arquitetos studio, this is a decision that must consider factors such as the architectural project, the energy efficiency of the models and sustainability.
For the two, the choice of one does not imply the exclusion of the other, since both have different purposes in interior design. “The ideal is to know what the inhabitant wants for the space. It is necessary to understand these desires, since this choice directly influences functionality and, above all, well-being,” they explain.
Ventilation x Cooling
Initially, it is important to consider the specific needs of each region. The Northern region, for example, characterized by high temperatures and high humidity, requires the use of air conditioning to guarantee thermal tranquility in internal environments, both day and night. In the South-East region, where the heat is intense, especially in summer, air conditioning is often preferred, while in milder seasons fans are effective responses.
Architect Ieda Korman describes that the ventilation has the purpose of ventilating the rooms through the circulation of air currents which guarantee, in addition to renovation, the elimination of pollutants, vapours, odors and excess humidity. “In moderate climates, it promotes a healthier and more pleasant environment. To this end, the ceiling fan can be implemented to offer adequate movement and air exchange,” he says.
On the other hand, Carina Korman clarifies that the Cooling offers a more immediate response to heat, offering freshness even under the most intense heat waves. “Air conditioning is one of the most common solutions, as the car cools the heat of the indoor air, creating a favorable environment.”
For comparison purposes, cooling focuses on controlling the temperature of the air, while ventilation refers to the quality and movement of this air. Professionals believe that both are crucial in designing interior projects, as they promote health.
“Finding this balance between fan and air conditioning is essential for a space where temperature can be effectively managed and air circulation optimized,” Carina and Ieda point out.
Aesthetic thermalism
In many architectural projects aesthetics is the determining factor and therefore both require a careful approach to integrate the needs of the thermal gradient according to the desired style.
For architects Carina and Ieda Korman, when it comes to air conditioning, ceiling fans have more combinations with furniture, while the practicality of air conditioning can prevail over aesthetic considerations.
Ceiling fans
They are often defined by their ability to become decorative elements. “Available in a wide range of drawings and colors, from the most classic to the contemporary and minimalist ones, for every proposal there is always the perfect ceiling fan”, underlines Carina.
The architect also underlines that, despite the wrong association with the idea of being noisy and spacious, the market has innovated and now works with innovative, silent, easy to install and adaptable systems.
The blades, fixtures and finishes are customizable features, making the ceiling fan a complement to any decorative proposal. Furthermore, it is ideal for those who suffer from respiratory allergies and experience discomfort with air conditioning.
Air conditioning systems, although essential for well-being, often indicate aesthetic problems. “They are always fixed to some wall or window, interfering with the design of the residence. And there is nothing to be done,” adds architect Ieda.
A growing trend is more discreet units, hidden by integrated or centralized ducts, but the professional warns that it is necessary to check if there is the necessary load for this type of equipment.
Energy efficiency
Before purchasing your air conditioner or ceiling fan, Ieda explains that you need to evaluate excessive electricity consumption, the efficiency of the desired version and long-term maintenance.
- Ceiling fans are designed for relatively low energy consumption. Other advantages include the cheaper price of equipment, installation, installation and any repairs;
- Air conditioning systems, on the other hand, have higher consumption, especially on the hottest days and in the hottest places. Installation, maintenance and cleaning require the intervention of technicians and, if carried out regularly, extend the useful life of the device.
“An interesting tip is to favor Inverter technology, which saves up to 63% energy compared to the conventional model. In its composition, the device has a continuous compressor which avoids light peaks when turning the device on and off, has a shorter operating time to reach the desired temperature and with less noise from the internal and external units”, they conclude.
