9 cleaning trends to try this year: opinions from professional cleaners

What do you think is now considered a trend in the field of tidying and cleanliness in the house – the Konmari method, organization and minimalism, or automation and robots in cleaning ?

The pandemic has changed our lives once and for all – for several years now, the tag #CleanTok has confidently surpassed #BeautyTok in social networks in terms of the number of views. Cleaning hacks go viral in minutes, and bloggers demonstrating their organizational skills attract millions of people.

Do you want to know what techniques can turn everyday tasks into creative and fun activities? Here are the trends that experts say are worth paying attention to.

Use natural cleaning products

Use natural cleaning products

According to professional housekeeper Sarah San Angelo, she is increasingly being asked to use natural cleaning products for cleaning. “Customers often greet me with new products made from TikTok recipes, like homemade vinegar spray. This is a big trend, I love how eco-friendly cleaning is combined with taking care of your own health. But sometimes, of course, you have to explain that there are no universal remedies: for example, vinegar is not suitable for cleaning natural stone,” explains Sarah.

One hour method

Among those who are horrified at the thought of tidying up their entire house at once, a cleaning zoning system called the one-hour method has become popular. Its concept is very simple: choose a room or part of the house and spend an hour cleaning it. As professional housekeeper Angela Rubin explains, the idea is to clean as much as possible in the allotted time — this allows you to not overwhelm yourself while still keeping things clean.

Use of ultraviolet radiation

Using ultraviolet light (UV-C) technology to kill germs is a revolution in the cleaning industry, says Angela. “UV lamps have been shown to be effective against bacteria and viruses. They are increasingly used to disinfect surfaces and objects that we touch frequently, such as smartphones. The beams don’t damage even the most sensitive materials and you don’t need to spend time scrubbing anything: it makes life so much easier,” says Rubin.

Core-4 method

The Core-4 method, which has gone viral on TikTok, is a kind of cleaning according to the schedule of a specific space. The technique is simple: all actions must be divided into four stages.

  1. Empty: Remove clutter and bulky items to create more space, then literally throw all the items in one big pile on the floor.
  2. Categorize – distribute: using several containers, group objects with a similar purpose (for example, combine office supplies or objects that are on the table).
  3. Cut it out: Spend time organizing and sorting the items in each bin – remove what needs to be thrown away or donated (get rid of broken items, duplicate items, and items you don’t use).
  4. Contain – place: assess your storage containers (e.g. closet shelves), place items in them. It is at this stage that storage systems are selected: measure the empty drawers, photograph them and only after that buy organizers.

Using steam cleaners

“Steam is one of the best ways to quickly remove dirt. You’ll eliminate the need for soaking, which always requires a lot of planning: you won’t have to think about what to do while the baking soda paste applied on the stove takes effect. The steam instantly softens dried residue and disinfects the surface. More and more people are investing in steam cleaners, and I encourage everyone to follow suit: even budget models make cleaning much easier and faster,” says San Angelo.

Automation of cleaning

automation and robots in cleaning

If something can be automated, it should be: this is the main rule of modern cleaning. Cleaners advise investing in equipment that allows you to do nothing at all: for example, air washing reduces the amount of dust in the house, a tumble dryer allows you to do without hanging objects and makes it easier ironing, a robot vacuum cleaner itself keeps the floor clean and a robot for washing windows eliminates the risk of falling and injury.

Beware of odors

As surveys from all regions of the world show, scent remains one of the most important characteristics of any cleaning product. However, attitudes towards it have changed: if earlier air fresheners were associated with strong artificial odors, now they are turning into sources of natural and subtle aromas.

According to the director of a Canadian cleaning company, Mikhail Golubev, the current trend is towards the fusion of designer perfumes and room fragrances: more and more brands are producing their own candles, diffusers and room fragrances. At the same time, the importance of freshness increases: exquisite fragrances require clean “background” air, because they are created to complement cleaning, and not to mask its flaws.

A second life for old things

Recycling and waste disposal reaches a new level: lately, more and more recommendations have been made for reusing old items – from cans to old shower curtains. “What was once considered waste becomes a source of inspiration and an opportunity to embark on a creative project as a family,” explains Angela.

Focus on psychological well-being

For decades we’ve lived by the principle “if you’re too busy, you’re not a woman”: your mother or grandmother probably heard you say that you can only really clean floors well with your hands, but not with a mop. According to professional cleaners, it is high time to throw such ideas in the trash and start practicing careful cleaning.

You can choose how to be present in the moment: your favorite music, an audiobook or an interesting lecture can help you. And, of course, you should take breaks and “check” your condition – do not let yourself be exhausted to the limit: let yourself have strength, even if it leaves dust somewhere.
