Sausage dachshunds could be banned from Germany due to law; understand

The country’s dog breeders association says the proposal is ambiguous and also threatens breeds such as the beagle and schnauzer; The Ministry of Agriculture says the draft refers only to the ban on “reproduction by torture”

Dachshunds, the famous “sausages”, could be banned in Germany if a bill tabled in February is approved, says VHD, the country’s dog breeders’ association.

According to the VHD, the text cites characteristics such as abnormalities of the skeletal system and movement, lameness, lack of hair, malformations of the dentition and dysfunction of internal organs. This could mean, according to the publication, that beagles, boxers, terriers and schnauzers are also in danger.

As for “skeletal anomalies”, the association specifies that they “could be interpreted as a breeding ban for any significant deviation in size”, so much so that this could apply, for example, to the length of sausage legs or other small dog breeds.

The German Ministry of Agriculture, however, denies that the bill would lead to a ban on breeds such as dachshunds. A spokesperson told the newspaper The telegraph that the proposal refers only to the ban on “reproduction by torture”, described as that which inflicts “pain, suffering and harm”. Peter Friedrich, president of the VDH, said the proposal only needed to be amended to remove ambiguities regarding the “anomalies”.
