Wearing a tooth piercing can affect oral health, says expert

The dentist warns of the danger of developing cavities and gum problems if correct hygiene is not followed

Summary

Tooth gems are teeth piercings that make your smile more charming and modern. The process is painless and the dentist must be qualified to apply them, avoiding damage to the tooth structure.

Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, Rihanna. What do these celebrities have in common? Everyone, sooner or later, has joined the trend of “tooth gems” or “grillzs”, as tooth piercings are also called.

Dental piercings can be placed on the upper or lower teeth, most commonly in the front areas. The accessory, which was all the rage in the early 2000s, is back in a big way, bringing a touch of charm and modernity when it comes to smiling.

“These piercings are normally not harmful to the teeth, since they are small jewels that are glued to the tooth with resin or dental adhesive, without the need for wear on the tooth structure,” explains Fábio Azevedo, specialist in Implantology and Consultant at Research and Development (R&D) of the SIN Implant System.

“The important thing is that the application is carried out by a qualified dentist, so that there is no risk of damage to the tooth enamel or irritation to the gums,” he concludes.

The process is painless

It is worth noting that since the piercing is glued only to the surface of the tooth, the process is not painful or even uncomfortable for the patient and anesthesia is not required.

Also regarding the material of the piercing this must be taken into account, the most common type is the shiny white “rhinestone” ball, but piercings can also be made of gold, surgical steel, titanium, among others.

“Ideally, they should be inert materials resistant to inflammatory reactions or hypersensitivity,” says Fábio. “Metal alloys, which can release toxic particles such as nickel or copper into the oral environment, should also be avoided.”

Oral hygiene in the success of piercing

The main recommendation for those who want to have their teeth cut is to pay particular attention to oral hygiene.

“If the patient does not have good oral hygiene, the surface around the piercing can act as a substrate and favor the accumulation of bacterial plaque, which can lead to the development of cavities or gum problems,” warns Fábio Azevedo.

“The treatments are the same that we should take on a daily basis, with or without piercing, and include brushing at least three times a day after meals, regular use of dental floss during each brushing and annual visits to the dentist,” recommends the specialist .
