What to add to the water so that the dishcloths not only wash, but also smell good

Raise your hand to everyone who not only knows that kitchen towels need to be changed every day, but also does it!

There are unlikely to be many housewives like this: we all tend to remember washing kitchen towels when they are already very dirty. It is not surprising that it is difficult to put them in order. To make things easier for you, we’ve put together some helpful tips that will keep your textiles smelling fresh.

Method one: wash with vinegar

Vinegar is the alpha and omega of not only cleaning, but also washing. It is the best product for installing a “zero odor” installation, in other words to eliminate unpleasant odors. There are two options for using vinegar.

Vinegar + boiling water

Neither vanilla extract, orange zest, cinnamon, nor rose water will make dishcloths smell fragrant when dirty. If you are facing a particularly serious case, follow these steps:

  • Boil water in a saucepan.
  • Add a glass of 9% white vinegar.
  • Place the towels in the pan.
  • Let the water boil for 15 minutes.
  • Turn off the heat and let the water cool.
  • Wash your towels as usual.

The combination of vinegar and boiling water will destroy bacteria and mold. With this method, you can easily get rid of all the unpleasant odors that have impregnated the fabric.

Vinegar + washing machine

If the towels are just dirty and don’t make you think, “Wouldn’t it be easier to throw them away?” – then vinegar can be used when loading the washing machine. In this case, there is only one important rule to remember: you should not mix it with the powder – add a cup of vinegar either to the pre-wash compartment or to the conditioner compartment and start the appropriate cycle.

Method two: wash with soda

What to add to the water so that the dishcloths not only wash, but also smell good

Baking soda is an excellent odor absorber, but it is not an alternative to laundry detergent or gel. This means it should be used with them: just add half a cup of baking soda to the detergent you usually use.

Baking soda also works great in tandem with vinegar. Perhaps now you remember the foamy mess recommended for cleaning toilets and drains. If so, forget about it immediately: bubbles are great for removing dirt, but are not suitable for washing.

In the case of towels, baking soda and vinegar should not be mixed. Proceed differently: first wash the towels by adding a glass of vinegar to the powder compartment, then start a new cycle – pour half a glass of soda directly into the drum.

Third method: use dishwashing liquid

Life has never prepared regular laundry detergent for the amount of grease that can build up on dish towels, but dishwashing liquid can easily do the trick. Add it to water, whisk until foam appears and soak the towels overnight – just rinse them in the morning, then wash them as usual.

You can strengthen dish soap with vinegar and boiling water. Pour water into a saucepan, add a tablespoon of dish soap, put it on the stove and heat it. Add half a glass of vinegar to disinfect the fabric and remove all odors. Place the towels in the solution and let it boil for 10 to 15 minutes. Drain the water carefully, let the towels cool, dry them (preferably in the sun), then wash them as usual.

Method four: wash with lemon juice

lemon juice

Have you ever heard that lemon juice can be used for weight loss – it is advisable to drink fatty foods to neutralize it? This is completely absurd: you will not be able to lose extra pounds with fresh juice.

But the fruit is quite capable of destroying grease stains on dishcloths, while acting as a natural bleach. But that’s not all: the smell of lemon is associated with freshness, so you can do without additional flavors.

Washing things with lemon juice is very simple: just add half a glass to the powder compartment while washing. You can also soak the napkins in a solution of five liters of water, 50 milliliters of hydrogen peroxide and 50 grams of citric acid – they can be washed after two to three hours.

Fifth method: soaking with brown and soda ash

Stripping laundry is what they call this life hack on TikTok. His idea is that some dirty items, like dish towels, aren’t enough to throw in the washing machine. To remove grease, bacteria, food stains, hard water drops and detergent residue, textiles should be pre-soaked with brown sodium carbonate and washing powder mixed in a 1:1:2 ratio. .

For a hot water bath, you will need a quarter cup of borax, a quarter cup of washing soda, and a half cup of powder. As soon as they dissolve, the items should be placed in water – they should be kept there until it cools (about four to five hours). After soaking, the towels should be wrung out as best as possible and then machine washed without powder.

How to scent kitchen towels

If we were talking about ordinary things, there would be no questions – after all, you just need to choose an air conditioner that you like. But this product reduces the absorbency of the fabric and is therefore not suitable for towels.

You can replace the conditioner in two ways: you can either add 10-15 drops of water-soluble essential oil to the conditioner compartment or place laundry detergent sachets containing fragrant herbs like lavender or mint on the shelf where the textiles are stored. In either case, the fabric will absorb the aroma and the tea towels will not only look good, but smell good too.
