The largest longitudinal waterfall in the world is located in Brazil: how to get there

It is almost 2 km long […]

Only 1%, out of a total of 17 thousand hectares, can be visited by the public. But the roar of those powerful waterfalls is worth the trip.

It is in Turvo State Park, in the municipality of Derrubadas, in the north-west of Rio Grande do Sul, that the imposing Salto do Yucumã is located, 1.8 kilometers long, considered the largest longitudinal waterfall in the world.

The attraction is located on the natural border between Brazil and Argentina, whose waterfalls up to 12 meters high fall into the Uruguay River.

What to do in Turvo State Park

The last stronghold of the jaguar in the state, the so-called “Gaúcha Amazon” has as its main attraction the Salto do Yucumã (“Great Roncador”, in Tupi-Guarani), which is accessed via a 15 kilometer long dirt road, from the Visitor Center.

At the end of the route you have to walk for about 500 meters to the Salto do Yucumã. The more willing will also be able to use their own bicycle or one rented within the park itself, in an itinerary that also includes a support car.

Despite being on the border with Argentina, the best view of the waterfalls is from the Brazilian side, whose bank is lower and offers a unique view of those basalt steps where the water falls.

The place also has two trail options (R$10, each): Lagoas (1,300 meters and moderate difficulty) and Onças (1,500 meters and more difficult), in the middle of the Atlantic Forest.

Since 2023, the park is part of a public-private partnership that authorizes the company Três Fronteiras Navegação e Turismo, of the Macuco Group, based in Foz do Iguaçu (PR), to manage and invest in the attraction for the next 30 years.

According to a note released by the Government of Rio Grande do Sul, the investment in the first six years of the concession will be R$ 11.9 million. Last year, other conservation units in that state also went through the licensing process, such as the state parks of Caracol, in Canela, and Tainhas, in the São Francisco de Paula region, Jaquirana and Cambará do Sul.

According to reports from the Semeia Institute, which also participated in the concession process of the park, considered the first and largest conservation complex in the Parks category, in Rio Grande do Sul, the Salto do Yucumã should now have other tourist products, such as avifauna viewing of the itinerary and boat trip on the river, as already happens at the Iguaçu Falls.
