World Coffee Day: discover the five best coffees in the world!

World Coffee Day is celebrated on April 14th and, to celebrate, find out which are the best coffees in the world.

Today (14) is World Coffee Day, the drink, popularly consumed all over the world, has lovers who manage to really wake up only after drinking it due to the presence of caffeine, an excellent stimulant. A cup of hot coffee goes well at various times of the day: after lunch, during a snack with a cupcake, with work friends, with family and even while working or reading.

Brazil is among the five largest coffee producers in the world, followed by Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia and Ethiopia. According to data from Embrapa, between 2022 and 2023, global coffee production, including the two species of Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora, reached a total volume equivalent to 168.2 million 60 kg bags.

The best coffees in the world

According to an evaluation carried out by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), which classifies beans into traditional, superior and special and analyzes various aspects such as aroma, flavor, acidity and uniformity, the best coffees in the world are:

Ivory Black

In Thailand there is a coffee bean, called Black Ivory, which costs 1,100 dollars (about R$ 2,200) per kilo and is considered the most expensive in the world. The curious thing is that this grain is harvested from elephant feces, according to the Daily Mail.

The process is surprising: the elephant eats, digests and eliminates some grains, collected from its feces, ground and brought into the cup. That’s because, according to research, the animal’s enzymes break down coffee proteins and make the drink less bitter.

Hacienda La Esmeralda, Panama

The wheat grown in Panama, processed shortly after harvest, has a unique flavor with intensely floral, slightly sweetish, rich in acidity and fruity notes.

Kopi Luwak, Indonesia

Kopi Luwak is a coffee harvested from the feces of an animal called a civet, a species of herbivorous cat, present in Indonesia, which feeds on these beans, which are carefully cleaned, ground and prepared for consumption.

St. Helena, St. Helena Island

The island of Santa Elena, located in the south of the Atlantic Ocean, produces a coffee famous for being super refined, elegant, citrusy, with notes of wine and chocolate.

Blue Mountain, Jamaica

This coffee has a non-bitter bean and a delicate flavor, which makes it special and surprising. The planting is carried out at 5,500 meters above the sea.

The harvest is carried out manually, only the red and ripe drupes are used.

How did World Coffee Day come about?

The celebration of this date was created in 2015 by the International Coffee Organization (ICO), with the aim of celebrating the drink and its producers, as well as highlighting the importance of coffee in the global economy.

The event is an opportunity for coffee consumers to learn more about the different varieties and preparation methods, and for coffee producers to share their stories and traditions.
