When she fed her daughter in the parking lot, the young Englishwoman was warned that the practice was not “appropriate”.
It is difficult to understand, but even today, in 2022, breastfeeding is considered by some people to be an intimate practice that spans the presumed limits of modesty if made outside a strictly reserved space. This is what happened to Beth Coles, a 25-year-old mother, who was caught in her car while she was nursing little Rose.

The case took place in the parking lot of Sainsbury’s supermarket in the Kidderminster region of England. According to Beth’s account, she was shopping when the baby started crying. Since she did not want to breastfeed inside the store, she drove to feed her daughter and seeing an employee walking towards her and crashing into the window, she thought she had dropped something along the way.
“I opened it, imagining I dropped something, but she said ‘you can’t do this, please, I think it’s inappropriate“, She said BBC news. “I couldn’t answer, I just started crying,” she recalled. Rose’s mother said she was still discouraged from leaving the house with the baby. “I just want to give up. If this is the reaction of those who should encourage young mothers, why insist?“he blurted out.

Breastfeeding is a right
After this unfortunate event went public, Sainsbury’s apologized in a statement, calling the situation an “unacceptable experience” and pointing out that breastfeeding is, yes, welcome in the chain’s stores. A spokesperson said the story is being investigated and employees will be offered more training on the matter.
In Brazil cases like this are frequently reported, but it is worth remembering that the law 8069 of 1990 ensures “(…) the right to breastfeed the baby in any setting, public or private, even if exclusive places are available for the practice“.
