Unprecedented Brazilian research, presented in March at the World Congress of Aesthetic Gynecology, held in Cartagena, Colombia, demonstrated that intimate surgery can improve self-esteem and increase sexual desire, interest and satisfaction in women. women.

“Many women experience discomfort and embarrassment in the intimate areas, due to excess skin (hypertrophy) on the labia minora. It is important to emphasize that there is no normal aesthetic standard for this region, as its anatomy varies greatly among women. Anything that causes embarrassment, discomfort, shame or worsening of self-esteem is considered abnormal,” explains the gynecologist. Igor Padovesisenior member of the European Society of Aesthetic Gynecology (ESAG), of the North American Menopause Society (NAMS) and associated with the Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics Associations (Febrasgo).

“The research showed that 87.6% of women undergoing surgery experienced a notable improvement in self-esteem and 82.7% reported greater interest, desire and satisfaction in sexual intercourse,” explains Igor, author of work.

The retrospective study included 119 women aged 15 to 69 who underwent internal labiaplasty (nymphoplasty) surgery at the Institute of Intimate Surgery, located in São Paulo. They were presented with a questionnaire about their motivations, expectations, postoperative pain, general satisfaction and impact on self-esteem and sexuality.

“In general, women who undergo the surgery feel uncomfortable with the volume of the labia majora, which can ‘mark’ underwear or bikini or in situations such as playing sports or wearing tight clothing. They also report discomfort and embarrassment during sexual intercourse, difficulty cleaning the area, dissatisfaction or shame with the appearance of the intimate area, as well as low self-esteem and low libido,” underlines the gynecologist.

Motivation – There is no single reason that leads a woman to undergo labiaplasty, according to the study. The results indicate: aesthetics and shame (21.4%), aesthetics (17.7%), aesthetics and physical symptoms (14.2%), physical symptoms (3.6%), shame 2.4%), shame and physical symptoms (2.4%) and all of the above (38.2%).

Improvement of symptoms – Among women who underwent the procedure, 89.3% reported that their symptoms and complaints had resolved, while 10.7% said there was partial improvement.

Influence and time until surgery – The vast majority (95.9%) stated that they did not have any external influence to perform the surgery (such as friends, husband, social networks or the Internet). Women, in general (37.2%), took more than 3 years to undergo the operation from the first moment they thought about the operation. And 92.6% of women said that after undergoing nymphoplasty, they felt that they should have had the procedure done sooner.

Improved self-esteem – 87.6% of women reported experiencing a great improvement in self-esteem and a more positive relationship with their body after surgery; 11.6% say they have noticed little improvement; and only 0.8% noticed no difference.

Sexuality – Regarding desire, interest in sex and satisfaction in relationships, 64.5% of women say it has improved a lot, 18.2% have improved slightly, 14.9% have not noticed any difference and 2.5% of them did not have sexual intercourse before the operation. Regarding sexuality, women were asked another question: Do you think that before undergoing labiaplasty your interest in receiving oral sex was compromised? 66.1% answered yes. Of these, 45% reported feeling ashamed, 28.7% avoided receiving oral sex, and 18.8% refused to receive oral sex. After labiaplasty, interest in oral sex increased significantly: 83.8% of women said the surgery improved a lot, 13.8% a little and only 2.5% said who still doesn’t like it or doesn’t practice it.

How the surgery is performed

The goal of nymphoplasty, according to the doctor, is to remove excess skin from the labia minora, leaving it inside the labia majora. The procedure can be performed with a laser and/or a high-frequency electric scalpel. Previously performed as a traditional hospital procedure, with the evolution of surgical techniques, currently in Brazil and around the world, nymphoplasty has been performed as an outpatient procedure, says the gynecologist.

“The surgical reduction of the labia minora is a relatively simple procedure, but capable of significantly increasing self-esteem and physical, psychological and sexual well-being. It is worth remembering that this is an essentially aesthetic procedure, although it also improves many symptoms of physical discomfort in the genital region. And the decision to carry out it must always be made by the woman herself, to improve her quality of life, self-esteem and sexuality”, explains the doctor.

No special preparation is needed for the surgery. “We recommend women shave the area a few days before. On the day of the surgery you will have to show up without any type of metal on your body (rings, chains, earrings, etc.). Before the procedure begins, a powerful anesthetic gel is applied which removes sensitivity in the region. As a result, the woman practically does not even feel the injection of anesthetic into her lips, which makes the procedure practically painless,” emphasizes Igor.

In surgery, absorbable sutures are used (which fall out on their own and do not need to be removed later). «The fact that it can be performed on an outpatient basis (without hospitalization) makes the operation more accessible (without hospital expenses or anesthesiologist’s fees), and also allows the woman to perform it without telling anyone (since it does not depend on the fact of have a doctor). companion during hospitalization)”, highlights Igor Padovesi.

Recovery process

Since the area is very sensitive, according to the doctor, the first two days are the most bothersome for the woman.

“It is common to feel a certain burning sensation. Swelling at the site is expected in the first few days and small bruises (purple) are also common. To alleviate the symptoms we recommend the use of medications and local treatments,” she explains.

“Most women have the surgery on Friday and return to work on Monday. As for physical exercise, it depends on the type of activity practiced and there is no absolute rule. It is recommended to rest for about 15-20 days, but it depends on individual recovery. Exercises that do not cause so much direct contact or friction with the region can be started after about 10 days, if the woman feels comfortable doing so,” emphasizes Igor.

Finally, the doctor emphasizes that the surgery does not cause the loss of female sexual sensitivity, which comes from the clitoris, a region that is not manipulated in the surgery. On the contrary, as demonstrated in this study, women who undergo nymphoplasty experience a significant improvement in their desire and interest in relationships.

“The final result, when it will not even be possible to say that the region has been operated on (since it leaves no scars) and will no longer have any sensitivity, is expected in 3-4 months,” concludes the doctor.
